eciadsl driver doesn't work, and I don't really want to spend an arm or a leg on a router...

Linux and USB do not go well together. Drivers for USB based broadband modems are very rare and often limited to the most comon distros. You really do need to invest in a router or at least an ADSL modem that has an Ethernet connection. This will also mean if you change linix distros, the modem will still work, whereas sticking with USB it may not.

I'm not sure what you consider to be an arm and a leg, but you can get a perfectly functional single-port adsl router for £23.49 (inc. VAT) or a 4-port model for £29.37. See http://tinyurl.com/94lah
