Very slow loading webpages, can someone help?

I've been suffering recently from slow loading web pages, I have this problem with every website i try to connect too, even the plusnet pages.
When i click to view a page, there is a long delay connecting to it, and once it’s connected the page seems to load up quite quickly.

I have a 1meg connection running through my Zoom X4 ADSL Modem, and i'm using windows XP SP2.

I would appreciate if someone could help me sort this problem, its getting quite frustrating.

Thanks

Darren

Very slow loading webpages, can someone help?

I've been doing quite a bit of searching on these forums to see if anyone else has had these problems, and i've come across a few things i have tried.

I've manually entered my DNS settings on my modem and TCP/IP settings to:

Preferred DNS Server 212.159.6.9
Alternate DNS Server 212.159.6.10

And recently i have restored my modem settings there default after making a few changes to my virtual server and DMZ settings (i wanted to host some internet games).

Nothing i've tried has seemed to help.

Guess the question is, why is the first hop timeing out?

Hi the first hop is your router and depending on the router setup this is normal and nothing to worry about.

I still think its that first hop thats slowing me down, i don't really know enough about routers and its settings to know whats wrong. I've reset it to its default factory settings, and that didn't help.

Plusnet pages seem painfully slow at the moment Sad

I have just done a test and my router also times out, but I have no discernable time lag. Where I work, all the routers to the gateway (at least 6) all time out and reject pings without causing problems.

Your symptoms are consistent with DNS problems - the first access taking a long time to obtain the IP address, thereafter it is known and pages load quickly.

Have you got XP set to use the modem/router for the DNS lookup? The router will then forward requests to the servers in its settings.

Thanks for your help, how do i check whether XP is set to use my modem for the DNS lookup?
I've got my modem and TCP/IP settings to use the following DNS servers.

Preferred DNS Server 212.159.6.9
Alternate DNS Server 212.159.6.10

I've had it set so it obtains the DNS automatically in the TCP/IP settings, but i still have problems.

In a DOS window, enter the following command:

ipconfig /all

This will tell you what DNS servers Windows is actually using.

The above is the important bit and shows Windows is using the DNS servers directly and not via your ADSL hardware.

Unfortunately it does not get you any further in discovering the cause of your problem.

I note you are using teredo and IPv6. I know little about this element of XP, but found the following link which may help (or confuse).

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/plan/faqipv6.mspx#EAAAA

Unless you need IPv6, you could try turning it off.

Update:

To turn teredo off, remove the microsoft tcp/ip version 6 entry in the local area connections - leave the "normal" internet protocol(tcp/ip) in place. You would need to reload it and set it up again if you want to use it.

I would also be tempted to change the tcp/ip dns in XP to your use your router/modem (10.0.0.2) as this removes the NAT change from a private (10.0.0.0 series) address to the address allocated by the ISP when DNS lookups are done. The extra forwarding by the router/modem will have negligable effect.

Very slow loading webpages, can someone help?

But not all router/modems handle DNS forwarding properly, which is why the recomendation earlier was to setup Windows to the PlusNet DNS servers.

Thanks again for you help.

I've uninstalled the teredo thing, but i'm still having problems. It seems that the plusnet pages are very bad, not only does it take 5-10sec for the browser to connect to the site, it is now only loading bits of the site, and the rest of it takes 15sec+.

I've tried the plusnet speed test, and a lot of the time it doesn't work, i've tried the test and it states it's downloading '0 bytes' to test the connection, and other times it works.

I'm really struggling to find the problem, i've ran spybot (just in case i've downloaded something dodgy) and i've restored explorer to its defaults, i've checked any activeX programmes running in the background, and that all seems fine.

Anyone got anymore ideas?
