Simple answer, you will never get up to 500+.

I get 510 from Freeserve all the time, I've just moved to PlusNet, [no activation, as yet],
Am I on a bummer?

It would depend on which VP your on, if
BT keep you on the same one as at present then you should'nt see a drop.
Plusnet are generally a 'faster' ISP than Freeserve
see here.
I'd be interested to see what happens when you finally make the switch.

It also depends an where you are getting your "speed" measurement from.
The Plusnet speed tester has given me one result of 537k, which if it is true is a miracle on a 512k line.
Using the average of a mix of ADSL Guide (UK), Speakeasy (US) and McAfee (Germany) etc will give you a more true figure when it comes to tweaking.

Good point, I tried the speed test @ ADSLGuide.org.uk, It came up with a miserable [actual] downstream speed of 469 KB/sec, 506 [true estimated speed]. Sad
Another point, I only bring this up because there is a 7 day back-log in answering queries; I signed up for PlusNet on 23.12.03 - OK, big allowance for holidays etc., But as at today, my Activation Tracker tells me of 'some [unspecified] probs' activating the line.
Is there a problem running two ISP's in parallel? I only want to do this for a short period to swap email addresses on sites such as eBay. Yes I could use a temporary Hotmail account - but I don't trust them.
There are [as far as I can see no other incompatibility problems].
Thanks for any help.

On the speed issue that's a pretty good result for the
ADSLguide speedtester I think the current average result
for the fastest ISP is 453Kb. The highest I ever achieved before
BT messed with my line was 481Kb(519 estimated)
Your line speed of 512Kb/s includes an amount for overheads,
so if you can achieve anywhere near the 512Kb figure on the
'estimated' result, it's good.
It would also depend on if you have carried out any 'tweaks'
and what values your using.
On the second point if you actually mean that you've ordered the new service on a different line (different phone number) to the one
your currently on with Freeserve, then you should'nt have problem
the delay may be due to BT carrying out some upgrade / repair,
I would enquire further via support.

No 'tweeks'
I wouldn't know how to do them, Freeserve's standard settings.
I feel better about the speed with your comments, but I never really had a complaint with speed until I read this forum. [Knowledge is a dangerous thang!].
I've already contacted support, but thought I may get a quicker answer from you guys!
Thanks.

You can't have two ISP's on one DSL line at a time.
Freeserve have to cease your current connection with them before PlusNet can act to start their process.
You may find it is Freeserve dragging their heels in ceasing your contract with them. See if you can downgrade your Freeserve account to a "pay as you go" dial-up. That way, providing you dial in once a month, you can still check your old Freeserve email address and also check it via PlusNet's Webmail facility.

You can, of course, have as many dial-up ISP's as you wish.
