This is more an attempt to stop people switching to ADSL than actually getting faster connections...

If your particular cable spur is saturated with broadband connections I don't see how increasing the speeds will make any difference, in fact it may actually make things worse. Remember the speeds quoted are theoretical and rely on capacity being available on your spur to support them - if you have a lot of houses on cable broadband in your road you will not all be able to use the higher transfer speeds all the time. In practice I have seen speeds consistantly much lower than quoted.

So in low cable broadband utilised areas the speed increase will be noticable, in the high takeup areas or where capacities are not sufficient you probably won't see much difference and may even see a degrading of the service.

Indeed, cable is much more sensative to contention, as there are far fewer properties on each pipe.
