Speed tests+question for Mark(support)

I appreciate that we are not allowed to replicate information from the "contact us-ticket system"
within the forums, but perhaps support may allow an exception this time.

Mark(customer support)very kindly and efficiently replied to my "tickets" a few days ago. I hope that support will allow me to quote a little bit from one of his replies to me:
"Please ensure that the speed tests you are carrying out are fair tests - in that you should use several test sites and not just the most popular one such as that found on the adslguide.org.uk site as this can give false information at certain times."

Since then, I have found this site:
http://home.cfl.rr.com/eaa/Bandwidth.htm

I was just wondering, with 109 test pages listed here, which ones to use Mark. I would be very pleased to see some sugestions here from Mark, anyone else from support or other forum contributors.

Support, I know that I have broken the rule regarding putting info here from the "contact us" area, but I thought that an exception could be made in this case due to the interest that this posting may generate and the subsequent help and sharing of useful information that may result.

Thank you all,
Regards,
Rog

RE: Speed tests+question for Mark(support)

Hi there. I use several different servers for testing download and upload speeds. I have found that I get wildly varying results from them all depending on time of day and traffic loads. I usually do a file download of 5 to 10 meg from sites that I know are normally fast to get a rough idea of how things are performing, but even this can vary a lot. If you want some dedicated test sites, here are a couple. http://www.dslreports.com http://www.pcpitstop.com
Theses sites also test the security of your firewall and offer patches and fixes to improve your speeds. They are, for the most part, free, but there are one or two sections where you are expected to sign up for extensive testing. Hope this helps.

Sorry, forgot to mention that if you go to dsl reports, look on the left side of the page and click on "our tools" for the testing page.

Thank you John for your contribution. I have used both the tests you mention.
I hope Support will also make a contribution too.
