Have you manually timed the download of a lage file to determin your line speed.

Speed testers are by their nature unpredictable as many things can effect them i.e. firewalls.

Also try the ADSLguide speedtest. This uses a different method of testing speed to Plusnet and the BT speed tester.

Also post the results (text) of running WinMTR (assuming your on WIndows) to the same address as the traceroute for at least 5 minutes.

Yes, I have just tried this and get very different results: "Downstream 931Kb/s" and "Upstream 242 Kb/s"
So why is there such a huge difference between these figures and those from PlusNet & Zensupport?

>Also post the results (text) of running http://www.ianwild.com/WinMTR.exe

OK, the response on www.linx.net from the Windoze machine, presume it is just the bottom line that counts:
| WinMTR statistics
Host % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last
green.linx.net - 1 | 444 | 442 | 15 | 20 | 32 | 32 |

And from RISCOS the response:
--- www.linx.net ping statistics --
1322 packets transmitted, 1322 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 17.342/23.594/563.357 ms

Hope this helps?

You need to post the full report from WinMTR to see if any packet loss is occuring and where any delays exist.

OK, but the rest only consisted of "No response from host" and a lot of zeros. Here it is: though no packet losses this time, I see.

|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

| WinMTR statistics |

| Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last |

|------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|

| No response from host - 100 | 336 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

| No response from host - 100 | 335 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

That is wrong and not what you normally get as it is reporting 100% packet loss on all hops except the last. Something very funny which needs to be investigated.

What DNS servers are you using?

You should get something like this:

___________________________________________________________

|------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| WinMTR statistics |
| Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last |

|------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|

What DNS servers are you using?

On the DNS Configuration page of my PCI router I have the "DNS Proxy Selection" set as "Use Auto Discovered DNS Servers Only",
then in the User Configuration :
Preferred DNS Server 10.0.0.2
Alternate DNS Server 0.0.0.0

Would it make any difference to the speed to have PlusNet's two DNS numbers in there?

To see what difference it might make, I have just reset the router to use only the PlusNet given DNS numbers.
The results of the WinMTR are identical, so that wasn't the answer to that bit.

Just a thought, but who was your previous ISP?
it hasnt left a proxy in IE/Firefox has it? or spyware proxy somewhere?

Do you have other PC's to test on/other installs to try?

Id download Knoppix (Bootable Linux Distro) and try with that just to exclude your Pc from the problem.

What setup do you have? Wireless?dodgy network cable?

If you exclude the above then you/plusnet can properly start tracing the problem.

I started off with PlusNet, so presumably that doesn't apply.

Do you have other PC's to test on/other installs to try?

This question triggered the thought that perhaps I should try running the speed tests on my XPPro machine, and the results are startlingly different. . .
ZenSupport came out with 839, 883, 940 & 931 Kb/s !
PlusNet's then with 965.5 Kb/s.
It seems that the browser I was using on RISCOS to conduct the speed tests has been affecting the results, though I don't understand how that could be.

What setup do you have? Wireless?dodgy network cable?
The router is upstairs with the RISCOS machine, with a very short RJ45 connection; the PC is in the cellar with a much longer one.

The WinMTR was, of course, done on the PC, so the browser doesn't explain the 7x "No response from host" I get every time.
This was using RealPlayer to browse, btw., but then so were the speed tests.

Just an afterthought: these speed tests shouldn't be platform- or software-dependent, should they?
