Speed at which BT tells PN I am connected?

I have been 'MAXED' for 3 weeks now and it settled down after 14/15 days to the BT speed of 6000 (I was getting speeds just above this, but actual downloads at best around 4500). Last weekend I replaced my ADSL modem with a Router and the BT advised rate went down to 5000 where it now stays. The PN page https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=stable_rate&pn_session=a328bed9472a6d99706a86d97d335364 says that if you are getting regular higher speeds than the BT one then disconnect for 3 days to try for an automatic update. Has anyone any experience of this? I would add that I have now gone back to my old ADSL modem which is again connecting at around 6700.
