Slow speeds

anyone else getting slow speeds? Just got this result
Downstream 254 Kbps (31.8 KB/sec) 274 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 242 Kbps (30.3 KB/sec) 261 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Just did a test and got 448.1 kilobits per second. I'm in a small vilage a few KMs from the exchange.

This was on a speed test site I think gives good results http://bandwidthplace.com

( I've checked it via another 500 Kb fibre optic link)

Are these results from the bandwidth tester at http://speed-test.plus.net.uk/ ?

Slow download speeds can be caused by many things, but I can confirm that at the moment there is ample capacity on our ADSL Central pipes and within our Internet Gateways.

Can you advise if you have performed the MTU and RWIN settings changes as documented at http://portal.plus.net/supportpages.html?a=241 ?

Does this speed problem remain the same day and night, or do you find your download speed varies?

If we can establish the answers to the above it should help us to identify exactly where the problem is here.

I second that! My test at 12:54 on the PlusNet speed-test page gave 55.94KB/s.
Speeds have been at about this level for at least a week. I downloaded KDE 3.1 (for SuSE 8.1) files from a German server yesterday (200MB or so) and got speeds of 45KB/S or more throughout.

i was getting speeds of 52kb a sec last night downloading from winmx


and i havnt had a problem (touch wood) with downloading speeds yet. its always been very fast

i mostly get >56kbps when downloading, but i still get speeds of 1-2kbps after 5pm till ~ 8pm. there may be 2many users online, its best to work around these times.

Hi MZ,

This does sound like it could be a problem with exchange contention. While there is not a lot we can directly do about this, but will normally upgrade exchanges when they get this overloaded.

If you haven't done so already, please do log this through Contact Us with as much info as possible and ask for the problem to be logged with BT. You may not get an iommediate response but they will add your exchnage to their "Hotlist" or if it is already there will push it up the priority list a little for every problem they receive.
