He didnt actually say it was BT's fault but it was the same reply we got on the post to us all about slowness and packet loss.

RE: slow i know i am dling at 10k

I've had p**s poor speeds all night, so I decided to do a speed test at ADSL.org then post the results and guess what !

Direction Actual Speed True Speed
Downstream 434 Kbps (54.3 KB/sec) 499 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 171 Kbps (21.4 KB/sec) 196 Kbps (inc. overheads)
This was at 11:00pm. These slow and fast speeds seem to coincide with people coming home from work and going to bed. It all seems to point to an overloaded system. What do you think ? I must say though, the last week has been OK until tonight.

downloads are fine here, 60k/sec constant any time of the day (cardiff exchange)
uploads a bit slow though only 10k a second ! - should be 30 ish.

I am on a different unmetered ISP while I wait for my ADSL problem to be sorted out and I did the speed test twice and these are the results:

Starting speed test...
Do not use your connection until the test has finished.

>>> Speed: 22Kbps (down), 63Kbps (up) <<<
Test complete.

Starting speed test...
Do not use your connection until the test has finished.

>>> Speed: 24Kbps (down), 64Kbps (up) <<<
Test complete.

As you can see the upstream speed is kinda dodgey to say the least since I am only on a 56k modem. So maybe there is some error in these speed tests.

;-)

Just a reminder guys and gals...

ADSL is a contended serive. You are NOT guranteed a 512k download or 256k (bit) upload. It can be contended at ratios as much as 50:1 for home users or 20:1 for business users.

Work it out in bytes/s and [pardon the rounding] your lowest downstram speed could be 1.25k/bytes per second and upstream could be as 'bad' as .625k/bytes per second.

This is a fact of life as far as ADSL is concerned - if you want guaranteed bandwidth, get [lease] a leased line!

And no I'm not a PlusNet employee - just reminding you all of the limitations of ADSL Smiley

Contention hasn't kicked in yet.

RE: slow i know i am dling at 10k

I was getting poor connection on 13/08/02 aswell.
it's been ongoing now for ages, some nights are good, most thou are really bad!.

For example i downloaded a 29mb program the other day "DVD Movie Factory" which would have download at 50K max for me before, but guess what it was only 8K download!!. It's a joke now.

Also i want to add, people complain about the Downstream, but what about the Upstream? i consider this very important too, and for the past month i've only been getting 6K/bs to 19 or 20 K/bs intermitently .. it goes up and down again like a YoYo.

My FTP transfers are as fast as a dialup 56K modem now. rubbish!.

Just wanted to add my latest here, although i expect it will make no difference, as i have been posting reports here most of the month and last.

Put it this way.. when i joined PlusNet ADSL i couldn't believe my eyes.. i was so used to a dialup modem all my 6 years online, and to see everything move so fast was just too good, exactly.. just to good to be true. From April to June it was great, July it started to slow down, and August is a joke!.. now it's no better than what i have said above!

RE: slow i know i am dling at 10k

Hello all,

How's it performing today? There was a generic fault on the ADSL network last night which effected the level of bandwidth available to us.

This returned to normal as of about 0100hrs today.

Please accept our apologies for this drop in performance yesterday evening. We're investigating the exact cause together with BT.

Regards, Torsten.

Hello Torsten,

Things seem Ok at moment,
it normally gets bad between 6pm to midnight when people get home from work.

I'll update this thread later with peak user-time results.

Maybe it gets bad betwen 6pm to midnight when people get home from work and start doing speed test after speed test after speed test, in a never ending quest to prove they're 'only' getting 310/127 Kb/s. Thereby flooding the internet (and PlusNet's pipes in particular) with pointless traffic, which slows everyone else's connection down.

It's just a thought.
