SNR/Line loss for Max ADSL speed

Hi,
what with all the newsa about our adsl getting put up to maximum speeds i was just wondering how to check it the fastest speeds will be available.

this was quoted in one of the other threads about the coming upgrades.

If your router/modem reports the SNR/Line loss figures then you are looking ideally for a high SNR and low line loss. Figures for SNR above about 12dB as a minimum and line loss less than 45dB.

MY router seems to have adsl connection monitoring and says this

<ADSL Status>
HW Status : OK
SW Status : CONNECTED
Indication : GOOD
Noise Margin : +36 dB
Attenuation : +33 dB
Transmission Level: +11 dB
Bit Rate : 288kbps/ 576kbps (Upstream/Downstream)

Oddly though, i just resynced as the forums were running extreeeeeeeeemely slow and the Noise margin said 10/11db before, now says +36? It is now much faster though!

anyway, my router doesnt actually say SNR, but is it the same as the noise margin?

How do these numbers relate to the ones needed for 2mb
:?:

cheers

p.s this is the tracert from when forums were running really slow(slow for last 2 days), the second tracert is after resync and forums running fast again.

SNR/Line loss for Max ADSL speed

Your line will support 2Mb without issue and likely upwards.

The noise margin can be used as part of the calculation, in place of SNR (though is a slightly different figure).

thats nice to hear seeing as i live in the middle of nowhere Smiley

Any ideas why the noise margin said 10/11 before i resynched?
I think i previously synched at 2am when i noticed a slowdown then as well and that cured it.

Neither figure may be the correct one as routers don't always get it right. That does look like a very large variance.

It's possible you have been switched to a different curcuit which BT sometimes do from time to time.

heres mine..

DownStream.
Downstream Noise Margin

relative capacity occupation: 28%
noise margin downstream: 30.5 db
output power upstream: 10.5 dbm
attenuation downstream: 27.0 db

Upstream
relative capacity occupation: 37%

noise margin upstream: 27.0 db
output power downstream: 20.0 dbm
attenuation upstream: 14.0 db

looks good to me Cheesy

how do you find that infomation?

SNR/Line loss for Max ADSL speed

i doubt all routers have that information, its not listed in the usual router pages that i access via web browser, but if i connect to my router via telnet then it has an extra monitor option.

If its not in your routers web interface you could try via telnet too....

just open a dos window and type

telnet your.routers.ip.address

eg. telnet 192.168.8.1

Mine has a testing page (Linksys BEFDSR41W)

I have the same router (BEFDSR41W) and having difficulty finding this, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Much appreciated
