SAR715 Thoughts?

Hey,

I'm thinking of upgrading from my trusty old ASUS AAM6000EV to a SAR715-PW http://www.solwise.co.uk/adslspec.htm#SAR715PW

Don't let the wireless bit put you off replying, even if you have the standard SAR715, I'd still value an opinion on how it performs as a router/firewall etc.

Cheers in advance.

RE: SAR715 Thoughts?

Before somebody states the obvious, I've already looked at the Solwise Forum, but I'd like a +net users view on the SAR715.

Ed

I've been using the one port version of the 715 ( 705) for a couple of months and have had no problems. I'm not doing anything fancy just running as a basic NAT system. I don't use the built in firewall so can't really comment on that.

The following link may be worth a look ( follow the link to the review to see the ADSL hardware review for this kit).

The following link is to a FAQ for the 715 ( may be of interest)

Have a look at the SAR110. Brilliant product. Packaged with 8-port Ethernet switch. See www.adslguide.org.uk hardware review.

RE: SAR715 Thoughts?

How stupid of me. The SAR110 is not a wireless device. Sorry.

RE: SAR715 Thoughts?

It's the best piece of kit I've ever bought. The support from the Solwise forum is nothing short of excellent. As you can probably tell, I'm a fan. The only slight issue is that it is advertised as having a DMZ but this isn't true, but nothing at this price range does anyway so it's no big deal. It's a breeze to set up though, just run through the wizard and set all your PCs to default TCP/IP settings and you're away. It sorts out all internal IP addresses, its own IP address and all DNS addresses. And if the line goes down it keeps trying to reconnect until it succeeds. You're lucky though, you'll have missed out on the month long fiasco when PlusNet switched their hardware to RedBacks. Until they finally managed to get the installation sorted out the SAR715 was just not happy. Of course they blamed the SAR715 right up until everything miraculously started working again. Having said that they've done a few upgrades since and I've had no problems.
