Router connection drop

My router (netgear dg834g) keeps dropping the connection. Here's a typical log of activity. Is this to be expected?

Router connection drop

Can you post your stats?

A log alone tells nothing but that fact that your connection drops. No clue as to why.

Do you mean these:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3744 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 47 db 14 db
Noise Margin 6 db 24 db

Router connection drop

My router also drops the PPP connection as well. The symptoms start with the internet freezing, when I log into the router, I see the WAN IP is not there any more. Line stats are

Down Attn 42dB
Down SNR 7dB.

I consistently sync at arouind 5500-6000 kbps, but when the above happens, the router resyncs, and suprisingly, to a hight rate!!! Then everything is OK again. Router is a netgear DG834G v2, firmware 3.0.31. My line speeds are pretty stable at approx 4-4.5Mbps, unless exchange contention kicks in. ( Blackburn exchange shows as Red on VP capacity, due for upgrade 24th Oct)

Looking at your logs, you're not loosing sync with the exchange but rather loosing the PPP with PN as the DG834 says "Loss of Syncronization" Things to make sure of is connecion type on the ADSL page should be "PPPoA" (on MAX, pass on LLU)

If your running the 3.01.31 firmware: I though this firmware was withdrawn from the UK market as it had major problems. Try dropping back to 3.01.29 (i think, the newest on the Netgear page)

Failing all that raise a ticket with CS, My advice is give as much info as possible and probably attach the log and stats if you can. I got a response in 10mins the other night raising a ticket at 10:27pm!!

Lastest firmware for DG834Gv2 is 2.10.22 which I have.

I believe I'm on MAX and am using PPPoA.

This problem has been going on for a year (since I joined) but recently my phone has been hissy and now doesn't seem to always connect after dialing...

Latest version is 3.01.25. Certainly worth upgrading.

If your phone has gone all hissy and staticy recently and you've changed nothing, best to phone BT Retail and tell them you have a voice fault. This may bring up a problem that "may" help your broadband.

Do you still get noise without the router plugged into the phone line? If it clears up, its a filter problem and should be replaced

Think I'm going to look at my internal wiring first before calling BT (and being charged callout when it turns out to be internal).

Quiet Line Test

Unplug any extension phones, extension cables, answer machines or fax (anything except the phone you will use to do the test!).

Plug a normal touch tone phone directly into the BT master socket.

Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)

You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no pops, clicks, whistles, buzzing etc. (listen for 2-3 minutes). If there is noise on the line, make sure it's not your phones connection to the socket (wiggle it about a bit) and that you are using the master socket. If you are sure its the line making the noise then dial 151 and report the fault, they should be able to sort it out.

Under these circumstances there is no need to mention your broadband connection since the problem, although most noticeably affecting the ADSL functioning, affects the voice aspect of your line and that has a higher priority in BT's terms of reference and is highly unlikely to attract a callout charge of any description

As far as BT is concerned ADSL is the poor man at the feast!

So, months later...(two kids no free time!)

Line checks out clear. Tidied up internal cabling.

But still:

Router connection drop

I've also had problems recently today. I don't use a router but use a dedicated PC for Internet Connection Sharing which is able to stay on 24/7 when needed.

Left it running last night for p2p - downloaded over 500MB (Wow eh?) and by morning was completely unable to connect. PN's systems didn't respond Windows kept saying.

Rebooted, tinkered with some things and all was well again but it would seem that PN had blocked my currently active connection until I was forced to perform a hard reboot.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
