RE: New PC - Modem or Network Card

Please read following first....

https://portal.plus.net/central.html?action=new_forums&forum_action=display_topic&topic_id=5471&disp...

For those that answered my questions earlier, I have one more. Roll eyes

1)I have been reading stuff about networking elsewhere, am I right in saying that as long as I don't want to network more than 2 pc's, I can just install a NIC in my old pc, use a crossover cable and I will still be able to access ADSL from both machines? (ADSL modem connected to new pc)
2)Any recommendations for a NIC, or just go for the cheapest, does it matter that much and the same question for the make of crossover cable.

Netgear seem cheap and stable and together with a cross over cable and you should be able to network the two pcs.

Maplins are doing a networking kit that contains two cards and a crossover cable for about £20.00

You can use a crossover and share the modem.

A Cat-5 crossover should be dirt cheap. Anything Cat-5 is fine, brand is not an issue.

I have a Netgear FA311 card, cheap, works great with XP. Recommended. Avoid using old 3Com cards like the 3c905 if you have an Audigy sound card.

I got the Netgear from PC World who *may* have long crossover cables too.
