Problems with netgear dg632

Problems with netgear dg632

I've been happily using an old PC with a BeWan PCI ADSL card in and smoothwall for a few years now with no problems. The old PC is nearing retirement, fans now sound dreadful etc. So I thought I'd save space and my ears by getting an ADSL modem/router. So I went out and got myself a Netgear DG632. Setup within minutes including port forwarding rules and retired the old PC.

At the weekend I happened to be having a browse around the internet and noticed that I could not get to some web sites, which was odd. I asked a mate to check whether he could get to them and they weren't down or anything and everything was fine for him. So just for testing I re-commissioned the old PC/smoothwall box. Lo and behold I could get to these sites. Switched back the the netgear and back to no joy.

So I did a trace route whilst connected via the Netgear to see whats going on, output below;

Tracing route to [] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms mygateway.ar7 []
2 21 ms 23 ms 21 ms []
3 23 ms 21 ms 22 ms []
4 22 ms 24 ms 22 ms []
5 22 ms 24 ms 23 ms []
6 22 ms 21 ms 23 ms []
7 30 ms 31 ms 31 ms
8 77 ms 203 ms 33 ms
9 33 ms 31 ms 31 ms
10 30 ms 32 ms 30 ms
11 31 ms 29 ms 29 ms
12 37 ms 34 ms 35 ms

reports: Destination net unreachable. Trace complete

Has anyone any idea what could be causing this problem?
What setting could be wrong to make connections via the netgear route differently that would make web site unreachable?

Thanks for any help.

I had a similar problem. Phone netgear and they get you to upload to latest firmware (which you need for maxadsl anyway) and put your MTU to 1400 (Wrong!)

I have found that your MTU needs to be 1500 to allow you to connect to all sites, if it is less then you can't connect to a number of sites including MSN and microsoft

So in your wan setting try MTU=1500, it worked for me
