Plusnet + UT2004 = High ping

I have yesterday migrated to plusnet's premier 2mb package. I connected to our UT2004 clan server and to my horror I get a ping of 88.

This is terrible compared to the 40 I used to get with pipex.

Here is the tracert I performed to the server itself.

I am being routed through paris to get to .nl? Is there anything I can do about this?

Sadly I doubt it, since the route your packets will take is out of your hands. Anything outside the UK is prone to latency.

yeah... to be fair to Plus Net you are tracing the route to italy. Find a server in telehouse and i bet your ping will be more like <40ms.

I know of at least 3 game server companys with telehouse presence.

my own company ... www.uber-servers.co.uk

UK2 > www.UK2.co.uk
4u > www.4u-servers.co.uk

when i play on these i have a ping of 20-30ms

Yes, but its only on plusnet that I get traced through italy. Back on my old pipex connection, I didnt have to go through this server.

My friend pings exactly the same server that I do and he is on NTL, here is what he gets when he ping the server:

10 45 ms 35 ms 28 ms unassigned.ams.seabone.net [195.22.213.22]

Compared to mine:

71ms 70ms 70ms unassigned.ams.seabone.net [195.22.213.22]

Why does this happen when its exactly the same server and IP?

I wish that was the case with mine. I normally use a Jolt game server in the UK and in the evenings the following ping times have been typical:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.0.1
2 89 ms 89 ms 86 ms lo1.plusnet.pth-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.6]

A lot depends on the setup, and you have to bear in mind your going though BT as well, NTL don't go though BT.

Cable is different to ADSL.

An ADSL user on pipex also gets the same speeds on that server/IP as the NTL guy does. Cry

Mine to the same IP is 62ms, I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless is it causing lag

It is causing lag, im also getting packet loss which makes things laggy as hell too.

Im getting seriously hacked off with +net, since I regraded from 2mb teleworker to home my pings are consistently rubbish.I sick of raising tickets and support saying its within acceptable levels. My first hop is always 31ms , it never used to be and now this last week or so pings are terrible heres my latest traceroute.

Plusnet + UT2004 = High ping

A ping of 31 is certanly most aceptable.

Have you changed your MTU, packet size of sliding window settings in anyway?? Running performance increase software can sometimes not have the desired affect?
N/A

Plusnet + UT2004 = High ping

I cant see a ping of 40-80 being 'unplayable', i'll have to wait and see what i get on my 2mb plus connection when they decide to activate me (exchange upgraded today, 5 years waiting over woohoo).

I have been playing games on 56k since '99, is this 'high' ping just for ut2004?
