Ping online?

Hi,

My pings are getting worse when playing online with my plusnet connection, when i first started out it was a very stable 20 ping. now it goes from anywhere around 35 to 90, and it never stays in one place or atleast around the figure its on. its like my ping is on a ping pong ball  :x

Anyone else with this kinda problem :?:

Thanks

Can you give some sample games and server addresses?

This can be caused by multiple things, of which it could be any.

Ping online?

Hi m8 Ive got the exact same problem. Im a Medal of honor Gamer, Call of Gamer. When i first got my plusnet connection I got a gaming ping of 25 on all these games. Then one day it went up to 50 so now my ping is double and it affects my gaming very bad. I got told to check for spywere etc virus, I had non of those things on my computer beacause i checked using adwere and spybot and have no viruses neither. So i thought if i format my computer and wipe everything it will fine, but obviously it isnt. I have no idear how to sort this problem out m8 so me and you are in the same boat. all my wiring is correct and im on a draytek vigor 2600 ADSL router and im supposed to get 100% out of my connection with gaming and im not!!. Sad Anyone got any idears on how to sort our problems.

Ping online?

Seeing this problem a lot now from gamers, but saw one post implying the new 622 fatpipes that BT use have problems with some routers. If I remember right it's a known problem for Netgear routers from last year. But saying that theres different chipsets in most of the routers[cheap & expensive] in use that have a problem with in game pings.

Took BT a year to admit there was a problem before, wonder how long this time.

As acarr requested could you post the names and addresses of some of the servers you're having problems with. Could you also run a traceroute by clicking:

Start ->- Run ->- Type in cmd, press OK ->- In the window type tracert ip (replacing ip with the IP address of one of the servers - do not put the game's port number on the end, just the IP address).

If you could paste the results of a few of these traceroutes into here it might help diagnose if there's a problem and where it is.

Ping online?

In game ping calculation is different to that performed in traceroutes.

Traceroutes show the physical time it takes to make data transit, in game pings are based on the timecodes used to calculate how many frames behind the server the user is.

In game pings will always be very very slightly higher that traceroute pings. This is because the data must be computed, sent and processed.

This means "time taken on your computer" + traceroute time + "time taken on server".

The face your getting 1/3 more time taken for ingame data, than the physical data transfer time, sugest slow processing locally or on the server.

From the first hop in PlusNet (average 28ms) to the destination (avaerage 29ms), there is only 1ms increase (based on the first trace).

This sugests no problems on the PlusNet sides of your connection.

What acarr is saying is that it could be a number of factors: your computer, the server you're playing on or a number of other things. Since I'm doubtful if it's the server (Jolt's servers aren't underpowered) that probably rules that out. If you could post your PC's spec, it might be useful.

Have you installed any new programs recently which might be taking up more of the system's resources than before (hence the increase in ping)? Things like anti virus software tend to use a lot of resources. Have you changed anything in your firewall recently? This can have a large effect on pings.

I have anti virus but its always disabled when im online. As for any other programes, no programmes have been installed. Also this problem has been going on for months, and i usually format my computer every 3 months, so when i did that thinking it would fix the problem, WELL it didnt. Oh yeah heres my PC spec.

AMD Athlon Xp 2.6+
Twin mos 512mb RAM
ASUS A7N8X deluxe mobo
Radeon 9800 128mb graphics
Maxtor 160GB SATA HD
Windows XP

IT cant be my pc spec its a good spec ment for gaming.

Oh i forgot as well. I dont use a firewall niether

Yep, I can't see any problems being caused by that spec.
