Packet Loss

Hi Guys,

I've been having a large amount of packet loss over the weekend (currently about 40%). What could be the reasons and what should I do?

I've done as Plus.Net have suggested and unplugged telephones, tried different microfilters and phone ports to no avail.

Any advice is welcomed!

Can you describe your setup?

This packet loss, is it to uk based sites, or american? or other?

Packet Loss

I have a Netgear DG814 Modem Internet Gateway, which I've used since joining plus.net in October 2002.

The packet loss is to every site.

Do you need anymore info?

Have you tried the speed test on the plus net site? Have you changed any settings on the router? or on your PC e.g. MTU?

Or changed the firmware on the router?

The speed test ranges from 300 to 1800+ so the connection is at full speed as I
have the 2Mb premier package (had since April with no problems).

No firmware or software changes at all, which makes it even stranger.

Still having the same problems Sad

Plus have said that from my tracerts it looks like a BT problem (not sure I agree with this) and disconnect/reconnect a few times to get a different connection. But this isn't solving the problem. Do I have to sit tight then? Will this solve itself?

Here are 3 consecutive tracerts for mail.yahoo.com:

Does this look like a problem with BT?
N/A

Packet Loss

It certainly does.

You have no problems across Plus Nets Network. It s not untill you hit hop 7 or 8 that you run into problems. Those servers / gateways are BT's and it is they who are causing the grief.

You mention previously

Quote
The packet loss is to every site

If this is the case it is not caused by the problem identified above. Would you like to paste further tracerts to the sites affected?

Thanks for the reply. So if I do the whole "disconnect completely for 30mins" this might help?
N/A

Packet Loss

No.

The problem lies within BT's network and beyond your Plus net connection. Rebooting your connection will make no difference.

You mentioned earlier that this was affecting "all sites". is this still the case? if so, it is a different issue and will need checking out.

Packet Loss

It does seem to affect all sites, but the amount it affects them varies. For instance, the plus portal is sometimes instant, sometimes refuses to load.

I don't know if speed test results help, but here are some results from this morning:

11-07-2005 08:22:04 1100.6
11-07-2005 08:21:35 2016.6
11-07-2005 08:04:08 290.2
11-07-2005 07:57:00 988.5
11-07-2005 07:56:11 88.3
11-07-2005 07:55:29 539.8

Speed tests are generally unreliable. Are those taken from Plus Nets speed test?

Try the one on ADSL Guide and ensure no other apps, including email are running. Post the results.

Those were plus.net tests. I can't get the adslguide ones to always complete (Upstream tests won't complete). Here's a result from the one that did complete:

Downstream 1369 Kbps (171.1 KB/sec) 1478 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 51 Kbps (6.4 KB/sec) 55 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Been sticking at it and upstream continually fails the test.

Hi,,
See the article here on using the BT speedtester. Run that and let us know the results.

Also run tests with your firewall and antivirus turned off. (only for a short time).

Here's the result from BT:

"The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

1070 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second. "

I did this yesterday too and got 739 kbps.

I will do another when the 30 minute time limit is up.

Just to clarify, i should have asked this earlier what account are you on. i take it it is a 2mb account.
