Odd problem, 1 website only, from plusnet only... Plse help

Hi,

I've been unable to get to the website fe.mamehost.com in anyway over the past few weeks from my plusnet adsl account.

I can connect perfectly everytime from another account, and from work, and from 2 other independant locations.

I have checked my pc's settings, disabled all firewalls etc, flushed DNS cache, changed through all 6 plusnet DNS servers with no joy.

It appears that I can not even resolve the name to IP (which is 69.59.163.204 I believe) . ping fe.mamehost.com and tracert fe.mamehost.com fail completely (unable to resolve...)

typing 69.59.163.204 directly into IE/Firefox also fails. An online DNS checker at http://www.squish.net/dnscheck/ resolves fe.mamehost.com to 69.59.163.204, calls it ns1.planetjay.net (the host?) and highlights that: "Security: Server ns1.planetjay.net (69.59.163.204) is recursive" which is beyond me.

Confusingly, tracert 69.59.163.203 gives:

which seems to resolve it at mail.theaddoctors.com

I have read the long posts re similar problems with the plusnet DNS servers, but they seem to have been resolved? I have also attempted an nslookup of all the plusnet DNS servers and they all seem to timeout.

Again, this site works perfectly from any other connection I have tried.

Can anyone shed some light or point me in the right direction?

yes i agree very odd, cannot log onto it through plusnet ADSL connection but absolutely no problem with several other dial up connections I have tried. As you say some odd DNS problem again? Guess not a lot will be done about it though as it was never really understood properly last time?

I suggest you raise a support ticket with plusnet. As a workaround you can always add the line :-

69.59.163.204 fe.mamehost.com to your hosts file (C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc).

I can ping that ip but I cannot connect to it via HTTP to confirm if you can connect to a webpage you can try telnet <ip address> 80 ie telnet 69.59.163.204 80.

Thanks very much for getting back. Glad to know I wasn't going crazy....

Inserting the addition to the hosts file now has me connecting perfectly to the website (!) through IE and Firefox - about the only thing I didn't try. I didn't becuse entering the IP directly into the browser failed - and still does if I have the line removed from hosts. Could someone explain that to me? I thought hosts just allowed you to shortcut the DNS lookup so entering an IP directly in the browser would make the hosts file redundant??

Anyway, I raised a ticket on monday and still waiting for a response, although I did include all the tech info. I might add a note, althougth I would still like this pursued as it looks like something DNS at the plusnet end, although it is possible (I'm guessing?) that they may have an incorrect web server setup. Even if they do, everyother ISP I have tried manages to accomodate the problem. And anyway, I'm a curious kinda guy......

Thanks again.

Odd problem, 1 website only, from plusnet only... Plse help

I have sent DNS lookups to all 6 PlusNet DNS servers and none of them have responded (they all timed out). I also tried mamehost.com with the same result.

Doing a lookup with another ISPs DNS server found it immediately.

There does appear to be a problem with PlusNets DNS servers and this domain.

Thanks for the confirmation, that was I was thinknig. However, have had my reply from my raised ticket from PlusNet support:

We are not able to connect to the nameservers of the mamehost.com domain, so the lookup fails.
Please contact the administers of these servers as they do not seem to be working correctly

So they seem to think its at the other end. Which is completely feasable - I am just curious as to how all the other ISP's have managed to connect without issue over what I believe is a prolonged period of time.

Any more ideas out there?
