Netgear DG834G - CHAP Authentication failed

I have a Netgear DG834G router running on old firmware v 1.05. I have attempted for months to upgrade to a newer firmware.
The firmware upgrades without problems but I get an error in the logs "LCP Down, CHAP Authentication failed". As a result I can't get an IP address etc.

The authentication details are retained during upgrade so it should authenticate

If I don't change anything (I leave the same username and password) and downgrade back to the old firmware image , it works fine.

Has anybody experienced this issue or are there any ideas.

Any help is appreciated

I know it seems like the password should be fine, but I had a similar issue back when my Netgear was still working. Same experience, old firmware fine, new firmware, failed to log in. Next time you try this, overtype your password into the router settings after the flash is completed. You'll save yourself a call to the new 50p a minute helpline. New firmware seems to corrupt the password. It only seems like the details are retained. Unless you can read those asterisks?
