Need some help Slow connection

Bassed on the two different traces between the two different sets of hardware, I can only presume one of two problems.

1: Still an issue with your hardware and wireing.

The second set of hardware, is set not to respond to traces. Can you re-enable them and perform the test again, using rhe 2nd set of hardware. That way we can rule that out.

2: Problems between you and BT, or a contended BT exchange.

Have you checked your exchange on the Exchanges checker?
Though it may not show there, it may help proove the location of the issue.

Failing that, i can only suggest performing a test using the BT Speed tester and following the fault finding tutorials, fully lliminate your side of the problems.

The BT Speedtester tutorial can be found HERE and the Fault finding tutorial is HERE

If you find the BT Speedtest giving slow responces, then I suggest raising this to support, giving as much detail as you can, along with the results from the BT Speedtester, and noting you have followed the fault finder.

It may also help by filling in the fault reporting form HERE and submitting the results to PlusNet (not the phpBB version).

This will help them a great deal in processing any requst to BT as soon as possible.

Need some help Slow connection

Hi guys,

I don't even know where to post this so i post it here. I am a proud owner of a 2mb plusnet adsl connection. At least i was until sometime ago.
Around Christmass the connection started acting weird and slowed down to almost resembling a 56k line. That became frustrating and i contacted the guys in the plusnet center and the directed me to the online form. Btw i havent filled that thing yet.
Possible suggestions explanation by others:
*Old firmware in my router making some sort of collision with the line.
*The problem plusnet is facing with BT and the general slow speeds
*Someone having a spyware on one of the pcs in the network
*And last but not least a DOS

The first one i combated it by switching from my eTec i currently have to a netgear. The second I can't do much. The third i am pretty sure all pcs are clean since all have norton antivirus 2005 on them. And coming to the last thing.

Checking the logs of the netgear router i get this
Tue, 2005-01-18 15:36:52 - UDP Packet - Source:83.26.60.213,4672 Destination:84.*.*.*,4673 - [DOS]

I filter out my ip for reasons most understand. This is happening nonstop since i plugged the modem in the phone line.

This is the traceroot running at the same time:

A bit of mess.

Anyway until i changed the router the last and average ping where about 2000ms which is ridiculus for a 2mb line.
I am thinking of terminating my contract.
Anyway that was way too long.

Thanks for any later help

Right, it looks like you ahve possibly more than one problem here.

The first think i should point out is your traceroute. It you take a look at the first line, ti shows that you have 1% packet loss to your router and that the average ping is 7ms.

This is very high for a home network. You should not see any packet loss and the average should never push above 2ms.

The rest of the trace shows loss too however, working out if this is part of the issues with your network, or another issue on top, would not be possible, until you remove the issues on your network.

As for the DOS attempts, these look like false possatives.

The destination port is UDP 4673, which on a quick search seems to be emule. Do you or have you been running emule on any of your systems?

Some P2P networks can generate some traffic after you have disconnected, whilst your details slowly vanish from left over search results.

Aha thanx for the quick reply. I overlloked the port of the traffic and i see you were right now.
I changed back to my old router. Can you explain with this traceroot:
Host - % | Sent | Recv | Best | Avrg | Wrst | Last |
|------------------------------------------------|------|------|------|------|------|------|
No response from host - 100 | 131 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net - 1 | 131 | 129 | 20 | 537 | 2223 | 451 |
ge1-0-0-902.ptn-gw1.plus.net - 2 | 131 | 128 | 21 | 544 | 2204 | 421 |
ge0-1-0-0.er0.tclon.uk.easynet.net - 2 | 131 | 128 | 20 | 540 | 2144 | 481 |
ge0-1-0-0.br0.tclon.uk.easynet.net - 1 | 131 | 129 | 20 | 535 | 2173 | 381 |
ge0-0-0-0.gr0.tclon.uk.easynet.net - 1 | 130 | 129 | 20 | 542 | 2193 | 500 |
so0-2-0-0.gr0.tcams.nl.easynet.net - 2 | 130 | 128 | 30 | 554 | 2163 | 510 |
Network Unreachable - 100 | 130 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |

why again the speed is so bad? i see no network losses between the router and me. I had the router pinged all night and no a single packet was lost. this is a quick one so you can see.
and if indeed there is network losses what can i do?
this is the latest speed test btw: 121.1 kbps
only thing i can say is that this is silly

In case of my router i don't think there is anything to do since the router responds to invividual pings(used WinMtR to its ip) and noone changed any configuration to it since the problems started. I can still look into it though.

I will run the test and see what i get

Thank you for the help
