What do you mean by general set up, do you
want help on how to use the program or advice on
values to use.

Need help with DRTCP

Hi and thanks for reading me, do you know of a general set up for DRTCP only I keep on getting conflicting advice from people.

Binatone 3 light = ADSL 500 on Windows ME.

Cheers

We need to know what service you are on : 250k, 512k, 1Mb Huh as the tweaks are slightly differenet for each.
Also is it a USB modem or router connection method.

Hi cqg4uzg

It is a 512k 3 light Binatone USB modem, tiny little thing, I got it from Plusnet when I signed up.

OK, you will need to make sure you select the correct "adapter" in DrTCP before entering any parameters.
Good starting point for 512 is
MTU = 1478
RWIN = 13302
Leave everything else at default.
The RWIN must be a mulitple of the MTU, so when changing RWIN< change it in 1478 (as MTU indicated above) increments or decrements.

You could download "dsl speedup" and allow that to do it for you. It's shareware but will allow a couple of "tune ups".

Mine will not accept anything above 1472 (You can set DrTCP to higher but it does not set the modem to higher)
I use RWIN of 17184 (does not seem to make much difference)
An RWIN of 5840 gave me above 480kbps (with MTU 1472) on PlusNet's meter but slowed down my general surfing (Tested via Numion)
That's with a Binatone USB 500 3 lights

A low RWIN will give better speeds on local servers, but will not cope with the higher latency of overseas sites, hence slowing your general surfing.

I havn,t heard of anyone else not being able to get a MTU over 1472 on the 3light Binatone ... any comment from anyone else on this ??

Glad to see you use a "real world" speed test - Numion. Raw data is only half the story. However, every result will be different, so do averages when testing.
PlusNet speed test can give me results faster than my 512k connection is capable of.

There was one other poster who hit a 1472 limit on the 3-lighter about a month ago - IIRC - you need to go on a site that checks and reports your MTU - dunno where it is in the registry and too lazy to find out!

There have been a few other posts and the latest
Binatone modem appears to default to MTU 1472.
If this is the case then set this to the same value
on your pc.
It's also said to behave as a network adapter, so
make sure if it's listed as one to set MTU to 1472
under network adapter settings in DrTCP and
you may aswell do the same under MTURAS.
As for RWIN you can experiment with different
values but probably pcorkers settings will
be a good alround compromise.
You can check to see what current MTU settings
you have by taking a tweak test at DSLReports.
DSLReports recommend slightly lower RWIN
values I always get slower results when I
stick to RWIN in their recommended range,
your connection may be different.
As for hitting speeds above 470 Kb the more exchanges
BT 'upgrade' the less likely this will become.

Warning - Whatever you do don't

download "dsl speedup"
http://download.com.com/3000-2155-10250379.htm

If you read the opions on CNET you will see that it's full of Spyware & trashes IE - this indeed happened to me, I've just had to do a system restore

Very nasty indeed Evil I'm glad I set a restore point yesterday.

You live & learn, it's a shame but there is a lot of good freeware out there.

Going to go back to CNET & leave my opinion, anybody else who got caught out ought to do the same

Jeff

ps just followed the original link again, looks like I got caught out with a pagejack the first time.
