My Plusnet Speeds.....

Okay guys, please forgive what is possibly a 'noob' question, but I am really struggling with my plusnet speeds at the moment.
I live 229 metres (as crow flies) from exchange, which I think is fairly close as these things go. I keep seeing you talking about sync speeds and attenutation, and to be honest, haven't got a clue what that means, but if it's any help, my stats are posted here...http://www.emcy.co.uk/images/adslstatus.gif

My speedtest.net results seldom come in faster than 3000kbps, and my bittorrent and ftp speeds are quite frankly a joke - 5-14kbps max. Am I doing something wrong here, or do any of you clever people have some suggestions for me? I would have hoped living this close to the exchange to be getting some slightly better speeds.

Thanks in advance.

I think im right in saying that Plusnet Throttle the P2p bandwith to users like myself and you. To keep people using these programs taking up so much of Plusnet bandwith (basicly they slow you connection to a crawl on P2p)Which i think Stinks :x

Cheesy Same for bittorent for me, my speeds are between 1kbps/10kbps from 10am morning till 12 midnight, after 12 it goes up to around between 20/40kbps. Its always bang on time when the speeds changed, PN are deliberatly cutting your speeds down on purpose, i think this is a disgrace as i pay my bill at the end of the month and should be able to download from wherever i want without pointless speed restrictions, im sick of paying £22 a month for 56k dial up speeds, im in the process of trying to cancell my account, its like trying to get blood out of a stone though Evil .

Your stats are A1 so you should get good speeds. The problem with P2P is if plus net dont slow it are other isps slowing it down? If other isp slow it down then you cant get good speed as the suppliers isp is slowing it to you.

Your best trying download from MS as normally you get top speed from them. Its often worth trying another p2p as some work better than others I use emule which gives me good speeds but it does pick up speed after 12:30 am

Thanks for the advice there...

I've just been reading on other threads, about the p2p bandwith throttling, and while that does annoy me greatly at least it explains that side of it, but surely on a 8mb connection, when only 230 (approx) metres from exchange, I should be getting better than 3000kbps. When I first signed up to plusnet only 3 months ago, when I moved in, I was getting 6210kbps quite regularly. I've tried the master socket thing and all that. It is just too much customer demand, not enough infrastructure?

Regards,
Marc.

As mwright has said your stats indicate a good connection so there shouldn't be any need to fiddle around with tricks to improve your Noise Margin on a MaxDSL connection-- maybe to get the most you can out of ADSL2+ but that's a different story!

There are four possible areas that can cause what you are experiencing:-

Poor optimisation of your settings-- see http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/tweak.htm

Contention at your exchange

Contention and traffic management on PlusNet's network

Throttling or contention between the download source and PlusNet's network

You can only do anything about the first of these, BT control the second, PlusNet are responsible for the third and your guess is as good as mine regarding the fourth Wink

Don't suppose you have exceeded your usage limit for this month have you by any chance?

It certainly sounds like you may have done.

See this link for an explanation of the allowances and speed throttling that takes place:

Sounds like PN taking their fair usage thing too far.

Seems stupid really doesn't it. You can download files of any size from a http server and they don't care. If it's a P2P server they cut your speed.

We need a .php script to transfer P2P files to a remote http server where they can be downloaded via http Wink
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

P2P speeds

When I first subscribed to broadband premier I was quite happy with p2p speeds. Lately speeds have become a joke, sometimes less than 2 kb/s from 10am to midnight.I migrated to Aquiss today at 1630 hours and immediately achieved p2p speeds in excess of 100kb/s. Goodbye Plusnet Cheesy
