MaxDSL Questions

My apologies if this has been asked before but I have a few queries about MaxDSL. I've been on MaxDSL since roughly 16th May, that was when I first noticed the download speed my router was syncing at was higher than the current 1Mb PAYG package I am on currently.

Since this time I've noticed the following. Is this normal?

1. The download rate that my router syncs at is variable - anything between 1.7Mb and 2.6Mb with an average around 2.2Mb. I can understand it being variable during the initial 10 day period but it still varies today.

2. The PN page that shows my stable rate has been solid at 1500 throughout this time but today I noticed it had dropped to 1000. I've read in these forums that there has been problems with BT updating this information (BRAS profiles I think it's called) but is it normal for the stable rate figure to drop? I've restarted my router a few times during the last 2 weeks - not sure whether this is recommended or not.

3. Download speed are extremely variable. I've had as high as 1.4Mb but over the last 3 or 4 days the speed has dropped back quite a bit, to as low as 177kbps at some point. I've run a couple of BT speed tests and they've reported a speed around 260 to 300kbps which does seem slow (although technically just within accepted limits I think).

4. I've never received an email from PN to say I was starting the MaxDSL 10 day trial or to say it had been completed. Does that mean the BT trial is still continuing on my line beyond the 10 days. Maybe I need to wait a bit longer for things to settle down?

Here are some line stats from my ZyXEL Prestige 660HW-61 router plus download speeds over the last couple of weeks. I live some distance from the exchange and have never been able to get more than 1Mb prior to MaxDSL.

MaxDSL Questions

1. It will always vary as it adjusts for the current line condition all the time, not just during the 10 day testing period. The 10 days is to determin the lowest sync rate that can be acheived which is then used as a baseline for fault reported on the line (i.e. if you are now syncing below that figure BT will regard it as a fault).

2. The stable rate will have dropped because you synced at 1.7Mbs. Drops in sync are detected and affect your stable rate within 75 minutes. It takes over 3 days at a higher sync rate before your stable rate is adjusted upwards again. If you happen to sync just once in those 3 days at a lower figure, your stable rate will not change.

This is what is most anoying about BTs system.

3. Speed fluctuations are the norm with MaxDSL I'm afraid as contention will become even more apparent with the higher speeds. Note: the PN speedtest is never a reliable way to determin your speeds. You are better off using a HTTP based test e.g. BTO HTTP download test

4. PN are not currently sending out Emails to those upgraded to MaxDSL or LLU. The trials only last 10 days so that has now finished.
