Loss of PPP every 20 minutes

For the last week or more I've been getting loss of PPP roughly every 20 minutes. This lasts all through the night until I start using the connection again in the morning. This is the modem log from last night after I finished using BB at about 01:40.

It also happens occasionally throughout the day and I have to wait until it reconnects fully.
I'm on a 1meg connection. Downstream attenuation 58dB, SNR 17dB. There is no loss of sync.

What is PPP?
Why does it stop?
How can it be prevented?

Thanks for any info.

Loss of PPP every 20 minutes

PPP in simple terms is how you get connected to the plusnet network. It is responsible for looging you into plusnet and getting your IP and DNS addresses so you can surf the net.

Do you have an idle timeout feature on your modem/router. If so, make sure this is disabled - maybe enable it then disable it - and see if that helps. If you have not powered the unit off/on try that. Also try resetting back to factory defaults (having first noted any changes you made to the config).

What is your ADSL equipment by the way. Knowing that we may be able to suggest something else.

Also look for updated firmware (if a router) as that may also help.

Thanks for your response.
I have a 3com wireless modem router 3CRWDR100A-72 with the latest firmware (2.05 (Jul 12 2005 18:33:26)).

I've searched the menus but have not found an idle time-out setting, although from what you have said it looks like this is what could be happening.

I regulary power-cycle it, as this seems to increase the SNR.
I did a factory reset when I installed the latest firmware - about a month ago.

Are you confident that this is a problem with the modem/router rather than anything to do with Plusnet cutting the connection after an idle period?

Loss of PPP every 20 minutes

I've reconfigured the router/modem and found that the idle time out was set to 20 minutes.
I've changed it to always on.
Hopefully, that will fix it Smiley
Thanks for the advice.

Loss of PPP every 20 minutes

Good question - I didn't find it first time round!

Internet Settings
Then in ATM PVC click on the red "EDIT"

Set "Connect Type" to "Always On" and " Idle Time" to zero.

I think this is only in the latest v2.05 firmware.

Worked for me Smiley

Got it

Thanks for that.

By the way - if you need to upgrade firmware in the future I would test the restore file before doing the upgrade. I tried to restore and the config.bin file would not work!!

I work for a network reseller - that's the last time I'll be putting 3com infront of any other products!!!

Thanks for your help
