Long-term pointlessness of binary newsgroup feed

Ex-ntl customer, new to Plusnet, checked out my favourite binary newsgroup, discovered 80% or so messages lack bodies. Looked at similar NGs - same defect.

Looked around the forums, discover the "complete" newsgroup service has been a long-term disappointment to Plusnet customers (accusation of "misleading advertising"), with many promises to upgrade but indiscernable improvement.

I also found mention of the extranews.plus.net 'binary improved' server: but it's no better.

I know it's an 'expensive' service to offer, but it's debatable whether their claim that "Plusnet is the best NG isp in UK" holds water. ntl broadband, although carrying fewer NGs, were far, far better than Plusnet for binary downloads. Even demon, back in the old days at least, could afford a good NG service.

Personally, I feel cheated.

(And just to pre-empt the high-horse comments of the simple-minded who think all binary=theft or =porn, the NG I mention is for vintage films, where - at least on ntl - I found many weird & wonderful clips which I don't believe I'd have been able to see by any other way.)

RE: Long-term pointlessness of binary newsgroup feed

Stitching my own thread here...

This today from +net: "If you are looking for complete binaries then you should look at a dedicated newsfeed supplier as becuase of the bandwidth it is not economically possible to do this on a value added feature."

To omit this information from the sales info means that the existing claim of a "Full, uncensored newsfeed with a comprehensive source of newsgroups" is misleading.

Even ntl cable broadband managed to provide a reasonable binary newsfeed for the sub price.

Dear Customer,

We are aware that there is room for improvement on our binaries feed and we have actively been making developments to improve it for sometime now. As we are not just a news provider we have to balance this along with the other services we provide with our accounts but this is in no way saying that we do not attach importance to the issue. We are continuing to look at ways to improve the feed and you will see noticeable improvements in the near future, for example, within the last 6 months we have tripled the amount of peers

Robert

Will something be done about the misleading advertising? I think it should.

RE: Long-term pointlessness of binary newsgroup feed

In away our advertisement is correct. We do not censor any groups and we accept all news from our peers. Thus we provide a full uncensored feed that our peers provide us.

Binary posts have a life span of around a week while text post take roughly a month to expire. Depending on the amount of postings of individual groups this may vary slightly from group to group. Thus, the postings that the original poster of this thread expected to see may have come onto the newsfeed but by this time could have expired from the feed.

We are adding more servers and peers to handle the newsfeed all the time, but due to the amount of binary posts increasing and broadband load onto the servers, it takes major changes for them to be noticeable, we are making those changes and slowly, but surely our feed improves. It is our goal to give you the customer a perfect feed. We are not there yet, but our ongoing program will ensure that the quality of the feed increases as we move forward.

Kind regards

Kevin Revill

RE: Long-term pointlessness of binary newsgroup feed

I have to agree with Harry about getting a dedicated third party newsfeed i myself have, after giving up 2 years ago on hoping that an ISP could provide even a decent text based usenet let alone binary.
Ive said in previous posts regarding the inability of ISP's to provide a decent newsfeed and that goes for Plusnet no matter how much i like them Smiley
And no one will convince me otherwise as its a simple resources and economics equation and targeting what is your core business.
I dont think Plusnet are being misleading though
as their feed is uncensored just incomplete so you get uncensored incomplete posts Smiley
But they can hardly go advertising that though can they eg. "Come to Plusnet the InComplete News Provider" it just doesnt work does it Smiley
Check out www.easynews.com ive used them for 2 years without a hitch and it was a revelation to my wife when she saw all the complete posts and how much she had been missing!
Cheers Ali
