Idiot requires help making pings & things faster?

there are several things wghich will affect your ping.....
when playing quake, ping sensitivity is reflected in how well you hit your arget and sometimes i just keep missing.....NO! im not that bad.....honestly... Cheesy
i watch the gateways and sometimes you just see them all over the place......dont know if this is plus's server or bt exchange being erratic with load or what but it does play havoc.....

often, its the virtual circuits acting up and a quick check of your exchange for anything other than a green light will highlight this...

you can set your mtu value to 1430 but it has to be both the router/modem and your pc....
your rwin value is also important as this is your data packet size and if theres a dropped packet, then it will have to resend the whole thing again.
higher is great for downloading and lower for gaming....
find out what the game packet size is...
eg. in quake and UT its 4k but you dont want it that low as each packet has its own overheads......you have to trade for when you wanna grab a file.....i think your 17+++ is prolly ok but i have mine in the 32+++........

finally, just check that you arent doing background idle up/down loads......there is a service manager for this in xp....background intelligent summin or other and that can also play against you.
finally, check your firewall....some are written poorly and interferes with traffic more than it should.....
i use the freebie sygate and its quite fast.....

now when i go up to play, i shut down the non essential services in the task manager with the hope of non interruption....try that too....

good luck.....

Idiot requires help making pings & things faster?

Hi there,
I'm on a 1mb PN line, behind a Belkin modem/router, running Xp pro on a amd64 3000+ type pc.

The modem is basically set to factory defaults apart from my logins, passwords etc.
Also the MTU on it is set to 1500 (seen somewhere)

I used drtcp to set my PC MTU to 1500 (It think) forget what I set Rwin to.
(what are the windows default for these ?)

Speed tests have not been too great for me,

Very varied, never near enough to 1mb for me Cheesy

I did a tweaktest

1. Your Tweakable Settings:

RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF
Selective Acks: ON

Actual data packets: 103
Max packet sent (MTU): 1460
Max packet recd (MTU): 1500
Retransmitted data packets: 0
sacks you sent: 0
pushed data pkts: 15
data transmit time: 1.593 secs
our max idletime: 203.7 ms
transfer rate: 60458 bytes/sec
transfer rate: 483 kbits/sec
This is not a speed test!
transfer efficiency: 100%

3. ICMP (ping) check
Minimum ping: 94 ms
Maximum ping: 106 ms
Ping stability:

It said my speeds were quite good, but I'm still getting quite high pings.

What can I do (and how) to improve this?
What ideally can I do on the router as I want to improve speeds on Xbox live for my Xbox's too.

Your advice is appreciated.

Thankyou.

theres a lot of folk with the same problem plus net say its nothing to do with them but 6 mnths ago or so i had one of tha fastest pings when i was playing toca race driver online i was always host but now the cars leave the line at the start of the race and im still plodding along behind them i know its ping as the cars are going straight through me instead of crashing into me so its like im not even there.havnt been able to play for ages as i said it used to be fine not sure if it was the upgrade to 1mb that did it im still in 2 minds wheather to leave after my years contract is up or not.theres loads o threads on this though as i think most people have a ping problem.try an independant ping benchmark and give plus net the numbers

itstheyoo

That doesnt mean its your pings that are the problem, it could be someone else's if someone else has a high ping it stuffs a whole game up.

I have been on BFDC servers with a ping of 28, with a bunch of friends, one person comes on with a ping over 100, and things start, get more on, then you have real problems, if someone else has a rough ping, it can stuff your game also!

OK, so does the above info look OK or bad?

I have been getting the same thing for about a monrh or more
I used to get a steady 950 960 or more but now the weekend and when the kids get home from school it all goes to pot .
So much for getting rid of the bad boys....that worked well did it NOT :-)

Are those taking overheads into account?

I'm also experiencing major ping problems.
From my usual 30-75 I'm now experiencing spikes of up to 3790.

Now, a few yes and no's

Yes : my drivers are up to date
Yes : my system is swept for spyware/trojans etc (currently daily in vain hope)
No : its not 'somebody else with high ping' screwing the server

Speed test results appear ok :

Downstream 1850 Kbps (231.3 KB/sec) 1998 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 241 Kbps (30.1 KB/sec) 260 Kbps (inc. overheads)

...butI'm also experiencing random disconnects while using p2p chat software and web pages are often 'currently unavailable.'

Is this all related to the DNS issues, or is it likely to be something else?

What ever it is I am still getting bad D/L speeds
I was getting 920+ downloading from plusnet and claranets news servers
but tonight for instance I am only getting 300-400 it some times peeks at 800 but not very often It has been like this for at least a month
:-(
At about 12am or 1am onwards its fine :-)

I never get pings >200ms here, sometimes get pings of about 30ms to people on BT. I do run my own DNS here, so perhaps it is something to do with the DNS issues (when i first got my ADSL with plusnet it took about 30 seconds to resolve google.com)

They are not my ping times thay are my download speeds on a 1 meg
when Plusnet get bizzy My speeds drop down to a 512 i.e 483.6kbps
when thay are not bizzy back up to the 1 meg i.e 959.1 kbps :-)

maybe its got something to do with the fact your on a 50.1 connection ratio, meaning if the other 50 are all on using their pc's your bandwidth is throttled, oh and btw your adsl speed has nothing to do with your ping to a server, 1 meg or 4 meg will have the same ping from the same place to place, its hops to the server not speed of the line.

Hi

Um I never mention pings anyways :-)
and as far as I no the exchange still has some capacity left on it
Just as a matter of interest what happens when every one get 2megs speeds or more
does it mean that we can all look forward to fluctuating speeds ?

broadband not up to speed

i had problems with my speed i reinstalled my modem driver and it was fine there after.
That was until i got service pack 2 for windows xp pro went bad again...i deleted service pack 2 and reinstalled it and it was fixed again.my speed has been pretty reliable since.
