IRC timeouts even when not using full bandwidth?!

i have recently re-graded to 1MB and 'tweaked' my MTU etc as stated in the sticky till i got very nice speeds , peaking at 120 on most tests, but average about 90-117 for general downloads.

problem is , even if i cap my download/upload speed on other apps to say 90 down/20 up i still always seem to timeout on every irc server after about 3-5 mins, maybe less!

This is really annoying as usually mIRC doesnt even notice until i try and type a message and then it says 'disconnected'.

Could this be related to any of the tweaks at all?

I have forwarded all the right ports for IRC, so i am pingable by the IRC servers but it still happens constantly.

Is there anything i can do to remedy this?

cheers

p.s my local exchange is constantly on green (dont think the peeps down here know what broadband is! Tongue ) and even if i am downloading at say 117k/sec it can still reconnect to irc in a flash.

Mirc is like that at times and often you get netsplits and disconnects. You can set your client to automaticly reconnect which does get around it.

You should also try different scripts as some scripts seem to hang on better, things like invision have built in optimization and work well with somes servers.

Is it the same servers everytime that give the problem or all servers?

was happening on all servers and happened constantly for months.

i think however i may have fixed it. I tweaked a little more with the MTU/RWIN and ive been downloading at 100k+ and still connected to irc after 20mins so far.

After tweaking some more my plusnet speed test result improved as well.
