I don't know what I am doing - Overnet & Firewall

Help!

I have been using Overnet for a little while now on a dial up 56k connection. Worked fine.

Got my shiny new ADSL connection and Solwise SAR-110 this week.

Browsing is wonderful but I cannot get Overnet to work properly. The connection status in the bottom of the window says that the connection is firewalled.

I don't know how to disable the firewall. I have searched the forums here, the solwise forum, looked at the review of the router on ADSL Guide and don't understand a word of what they are talking about.

My problem is I'm an idiot? Everything is written in TLAs (Three Letter Abbreviations) and I don't understand, I need an idiots guide.

I am running Windows XP, I have checked the XP firewall is turned off.

I have set the Router up just as described in the quick setup guide. I have not changed any of the other settings apart from the password.

I have read that ports should be opened or forwarded to enable P2P to work. How do I check if they are?
Are they closed by default?

I have not messed with any of the other settings of the router.

Does anyone know a site with a good networking tutorial that starts at absolute basics?

You need to setup port forwarding to forward the port number that Overnet uses to your PC, hence passing through the firewall. Check your ON config for the TCP and UDP ports it uses - haven't used it for a while myself, so can't remember.

Port Forwarding?

I know how to find out which ports ON uses but where do you forward them to?

Waht part of the router setup would I find the port forwarding section?

Off to google to look for guides on port forwarding, but would appreciate any tis anyone can give me.

Remember don't assume even the most basic knowledge, I know nothing Sad yet!

The router is a Solwise SAR-110

All I have done is change the settings specified in the plusNet setup guide. Everything else is as it came.

Look at the manual

http://www.solwiseforum.co.uk/downloads/files/110quicksetup.pdf

Section 8 details how to set up NAT (port forwarding).

See here for 'firewalled' users http://www.overnet.com/documentation/blocked.html

Thanks,

I have only Just realised that Port Forwarding and NAT are parts of the same thing.

This microsoft article helped.

Now all I have to do is translate the PDF manual into things I can understand
