How can I find my dynamic IP address?

Hi,
I have just changed my PlusNet account and now have a dynamic IP address. How can I find out the IP address of a connection? I wanting to run some programs on a remote UNIX system and need this information to set the DISPLAY environment variable.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks (and happy Christmas),
Chris.

How can I find my dynamic IP address?

I found a few sites that tell you your IP address.
http://www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/

However, I still have a problem. My PC is connected via a router. I can't get X graphics from the remote machine.

I have tried:
setenv DISPLAY pc_ip_address:0.0
and
setenv DISPLAY router_ip_address:0.0
and
setenv DISPAY goforth.plus.net:0.0
and
setenc DISPLAY GOSFORTH.plus.net:0.0

neither option works (where pc_ip_address is assigned by the router and router_ip_address is assigned by PlusNet).

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

How can I find my dynamic IP address?

that may do it, but sometimes you need the blindingly obvious Cheesy

http://whatismyip.com/

Oh and to get your internal PCs IP address that is use ipconfig /all from the command prompt

How can I find my dynamic IP address?

Hi,

Bassed on your reply, we can see you are using some form of NAT router.

You will normally need to assign the environment variable your PlusNet IP and not your internal LAN IP.

You will also need to make sure the needed port forwarding rules are setup in the router to handle any incoming data.

Is it not possible to connect using SSH? This should setup the needed configuration for you and even tunnel the data over the open link, so no other port bassed configuration is needed.

Why dont you simply change to a fixed IP? You can change it on the portal

How can I find my dynamic IP address?

No you can't. Plus accounts only have a dynamic address (apart from those that are currently being monitored who have been moved to a static address for the time being). PAYG and Premier accounts only have static addresses.

How can I find my dynamic IP address?

I am still having problems. I am running X on Cygwin by using:

ssh -X userid@hostname

The remote machine is a Sun Ultra 4 running SunOS 5.7.
I can connect fine, but when I try to open a graphical application (e.g. /usr/openwin/bin/textedit) I get an error message:

X Error (intercepted): BadWindow (invalied Window parameter)
Major Request Code: 7
Minor Request Code: 0
Resource ID (XID): 58
Error Serial Number: 47
XView warning; invalid object (not a pointer0, xv_get
finished; X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 7 (X_ReparentWindow)
Resource id in failed request: 0x3a
Serial number of failed reqeust: 47
Current serial number in output stream: 56

I am coming through a Netgear DG834 router, but I have set it up so that the firewall is turned off. I am running ZoneAlarm on the PC so that I can easily check the logs. There is nothing showing up when I get the above problem.

Any ideas would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks,
Chris.
p.s. I have just completely updated Cygwin and X to the latest versions.

How can I find my dynamic IP address?

I have tried http://whatismyip.com/ and I am getting:
87.112.0.26
for the current connection.

On the remote machine:
setenv DISPLAY 87.112.0.26:0.0
generates no errors, but I don't see anything, so presumably it is displaying somewhere else?

the ipconfig / all gives the ip address as 192.169.0.2, which is the address being assigned by my router.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
Chris.

How can I find my dynamic IP address?

I have found the answer to my problem.

basically use ssh -Y username@machine rather than -X

see: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/cygwin-x-faq.html#q-ssh-no-x11forwarding

Happy New Year!!

Chris.
