Have pity on me....please

Hi All,

ADSL arrived today......got set up without too much trouble with the usb modem. What speed!!!!!!

I'm probably going to ask a daft question here - feel free to laugh Cheesy

I know the connection is 'always on' but should I disconnect it before I switch off the computer and what happens when the computer goes into standby - should I disconnect it then? Do I just permanently leave it connected all day?

I'm so sorry if these are really stupid questions but I haven't a clue (and neither has my other half but he won't admit it!) so I thought I'd ask the experts (creep creep)

Best wishes

Tracey.

It shouldnt really matter, if you use the "shutdown" buttun under windows it should disconnect as part of shutting down.

If you go into Internet Explorer, Tools Menu > Options > Cnnections you can set it to to "dial a connection whenever required" which will log you on if you need to use the internet.

Actually there quite interesting questions.
In an ideal situation you should be able to
switch off the pc or go into stand by without any
problems but there are known issues with windows
power management and USB so I'd say it depends on
what modem you have and your pc.
You should be able to turn off your pc and this will
turn off the modem in the vast majority of cases
without problems. However in some cases, eg
some users with Binatone modems, doing this prevents
their pc from shutting down and so it's neccessary to turn
the modem off first.
When you go into stand by the modem is switched off
automatically and when you come out of stand by the
idea is that you should re-connect and continue, however in
many cases re-connecting happens but you can't gain web
access and will have to re- boot the pc, so if this happens
it's best to disconnect the modem prior to going into
stand by and then re connect after..
So I would say experiment with your own set up as there is no
'correct' way of doing things and leaving the pc on is
perfectly acceptable.
