FTP/HTTP on plus.net

can you have an FTP or HTTP server on your home pc and allow connections into it from the internet when using plus.net's adsl?

i used to have an ftp server set up on my home pc, but foolishly deleted my router configuration before making notes, when i descided i needed an http server it wouldn't connect.

fine on my local network 10.*.*.* etc but when using my actual plus.net ip which my router forwards to the relevant local ip, its just says page not found etc.

thought it might be a http thing, so i tried with ftp, still the same.

has something changed at plus.net and http/ftp servers a banned now or is my router/configuration more likely to be to blame?

It will likely be your router configuration.

Most routers will not allow you to use your public IP from within your network, and thus treat it as if your are actualy connecting to the router.

Only people external to your computer will be able to test that side for you.

cheers, i suspected it was my router, looks like a flash back to factory and complete re-setup.

so you can host http servers on home pcs via plus.net though? as a few mates have said most ISP's block that kind if thing

Nope, the only ports restricted is 135 (and one in the 4xx's from what I read the other day).

These have been blocked to help prevent the spread of viruses.

The only restrictions are that you can't run open servers (IE, they must be restictive in what you can access, or password protected) and you mustn't host any servers that don't qualify your your type of servfers (IE, don't host business sites on yoru home connection).

You need to setup port forwarding of port 80 to a local network IP address where the web server is, for FTP it's port 23.

FTP on 23? isn't it 21 and 23 is Telnet?

no plans to set up a business on my home account Smiley

re-set my router late last night, when i get home i'll re-setup the port forwarding and let you all now.
