DrTCP not showing anything in adapter setting

I've been following the whole MTU thing and thought I'd give it ago - downloaded DrTCP but it doesn't show anything in the Adapter settings at all - whatever I set remains in the window next time I bring it up but it nevers saves it as I still have MTU of 1500.

I'm on XP Home OS and have version 21 of DrTCP

Can anyone help as I'm definitely getting fragmentation when pinging 1500

Thanks

RE: DrTCP not showing anything in adapter setting

Have opened up DrTCP onto your desktop?
Reboot (well I did anyway cos I didn't have my adapter in the drop down either till reboot)
Mine says Microsoft TV/Video Connection. My other choice is a 1394 Net Adapter, obviously I don't use that for an internet connection.

Once you've set the MTU do a complete shut down and boot up. You may have to do this twice in a row as some people have said that it then works. Fortunately mine has updated in one boot.

Unless you are extremely lucky/gifted/have a PlusNet connection we all want ;-D you will get fragmenting at 1500. I've experimented with a load of MTU's and at current time the best consistent figures I can get is 1430 (plus 2Cool 1458 which is what BT and PLusNet recommend. Obviously you may be able to tweak a bit more depending on your setup.
Remember to do your ping tests and get a MTU that has no fragmenting at all. Run your ping for about a minute and watch it. ping -t -l 1430 www.google.co.uk is what I used tonight. (hit Ctrl C when you want to stop the ping test)

To get a rough figure for your RWIN use this calculation. From the Ping test get your average ms figure (ie 102ms) and multiply by 1.5, then multiply by your "Advertised" connection speed, not your actual and then divide by 8. This will give you a ball park figure for your RWIN (Tcp recieve Window in DrTCP).
Hit save and reboot fully, do it twice if you have had probs and then check DrTCP for the changes you made.
Give that a go, hope it helps.

Use the tests and report websites that have been posted for testing your connection, but take them with a pinch of salt. I had one tell me to set my MTU at 1500 even though it would fragment with a ping test. Using the ping test is the most accurate, I've found. And with that test info you can set your ADSL up pretty well. There is probably more tweaking available but ask yourself how many times you are prepared to reboot your PC in an evening to get an ounce more when tommorow it will fragment. :-D.

Don't take this I've said as 100% accurate. It's just what I've found to be the most accurate and least time consumming for me.

Hopefully the PlusNet service will be back to normal by the end of the week like they say. Don't fret too much over tweaking at the moment until PlusNet services are back to normal.

That said. Remember everyone, they are trying to make it a better, faster service for us and we really should show some patience. It is a pain in the ***, I have suffered alot like many.
......and
PlusNet, remember your customers are why you are in business, p*** them off and it's all to no avail. Be a little more personable and communicate more with us with accurate information, not a cut and paste job!! I look forward to the massively improved service to come!

What settings for MTU and RWIN would u recommend from the above ping test?

RE: DrTCP not showing anything in adapter setting

As for Dr TCP you absolutely must reboot after you have
saved/applied the settings.
The next time you open DrTcp after reboot your new settings should be in place.

My current settings which gives me the best performance
MTU=1458, RCWIN=14180

At MTU=1500 it fragments badly which it never used to so something changed on BT and/or Plusnet network within the last month and a half.

Up until then 1500 worked fine.

Wow Scowy C, if you can ping at 1500 with no fragmentation today then lucky you!! I sure as hell can't. The best I can get with no fragmentation is 1430 like alot of users after the recent PlusNet issues over the last few days.

Well you've got your MTU..1500 it is. That's the max you can use! Based on your ping test, a rough guide, and I do say guide for your RWIN would be
17376. Stick that in DrTCP, reboot and see how that goes. You may find a little tweaking up or down on RWIN will get you better results.

Also, try pinging that same test at 1500 a few times at different times of the day. Try tonight during the busy time and see if it fragments at 1500 then. If it does, you know what to do Smiley

Funny that...i try again and get fragmentation at every MTU above 1430 (+2Cool.

Well, he's using

ping -t -l 1500 www.google.co.uk

should be -f not -t to show fragmentation.
