Hi, have you looked though the MTU Tweaking topic, posted as a sticky at the top of this forum?

As Aaron says the MTU sticky is a good place to start.

Another site worth checking out is www.kitz.co.uk

Well laid out and concise with a variety of numbers to play with.

Thanks guys, wonder if firewalls can slow connections slightly my zone alarm seems red and green bars seem to take time for them to show from the zone alarm red/yellow icon , does DR TCP need a reboot to take effect,

Yes your firewall can sometimes slow down a connection and yes you need to reboot to apply DR TCP settings.

If your speed problems persist check out some of the speed related posts and follow the advice given there.

Have a look at 'MTU Tweak' and have a go at the following commonly used values...

  • MTU - 1430 RWIN - 13900
  • MTU - 1478 RWIN - 12942
  • MTU - 1458 RWIN - 12762

* Note, these RWIN settings are for 512k, it is also common practice to double the RWIN for 1Mbit connections and quadruple it for 2Mbit. Different settings work for different people. After changing the settings in DrTCP, reboot your system and leave it for 10 seconds and then boot it up again and run the tweak test to test the transfer efficiency of your settings. Always reboot after each MTU & RWIN change for the settings to take effect.

Hope that helps,

Finally it's worth bearing in mind, that MTU and the tweaks are different for each person and each machine. So what works well for someone else, mighten not work as well for you, it's a trial and error process.

Try the MTU and Tweaks listed above, and on Kitz website.

Finally a firewall will have a minor effect on your speed, but a) the plus points of having a firewall far outweigh this minor loss, and b) the actual effect to your overall speed is pretty small.

It's worth bearing in mind, that your connection speed, when download will be affected by lots of factors, such as internet traffic, location of the download server, virus and spam traffic etc.
