Downloading Capped?

Hi all
I have the 512 package as I am just too a bit too far from my exchange to get 1 Meg sadly. :-(
Can anyone tell me if Plusnet Cap the Download Speed at all please as I keep getting very slow speed when I download from a BT Torrent site.
I have the XP Firewall running but I have opened the ports 6881-6889 but still get terrible speeds. :-(
Peace
Andrew.

The servive is only capped if u r paying 4 a capped service. If ur connection is running slow. There is sumert called tweaking look down the thread it shud be there. If that dont work ring plus net up

Downloading Capped?

Very easy using DrTCP. Just read through the thread and it will explain what to do.

For my 512K connetion I have the following settings:

TcP recieve window: 17256
Window scaling: Yes (this can be no if RWIN is below 65536 - makes no difference to my speed)
Time Stamping: No
Selective Acks: Yes
Path MTU Discovery: Yes
Black Hole Detection: No
Max Duplicate ACKs: 2
TTL: 64
Dialup (RAS) MTU: blank (you don't need any value in here)
Adapter settings: Selected my Network card - make sure it's your actual network card connected to your router)
MTU: 1478

And my Netgear DG814 router is set to an MTU of 1478 (same as windows)

Then reboot both router (if you have changed MTU) and Windows for the changes to take effect.
Also run the tweak test at http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks and post a link to your results (ignore the warning for RWIN value). Here is mine: http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:5880caf?service=dsl&speed=512&os=winXP&via=pppoA

And here is my speedtest (from http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp ) http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedchart.asp?id=31e7fa1bfdf27baabc31e7fa1b

I assume by your registration date you are on one of the older ADSL home, ADSL home surf or Easystart products. If so, non of them have any bandwidth capping. Only the new Broadband Home limited usage packages have the capping.

You can also try these other values which others have suggested (as well as others in the MTU tweak thread itself)

MTU: 1458 RWIN: 12762

MTU: 1430 RWIN: 13900

Bear in mind when using bit torrent that you may need to have a wider range of ports avaliable, the more ports you open and allow to be used, the quicker the download.

Downloading Capped?

Hi Peter
I got my DSL account from Plusnet last November so it would be the older one I should think.
I was sent the Binatone External Modem plugged into my USB 2 on my DELL, I read your settings above, do you suggest I enter them exactly how you have written them and try that and what do I do if it does not work?
Should I copy down what settings there was there in the first place?

You wrote...

So what extra post do you suggest opening as well beside`s the one`s I have already opened as I dont want anyone trying to get into my computer obviously.
Thank you in advance and I appreciate your input. :-)
Peace
Andrew.

My appologies, but it looks like you already doing the right thing for bit torrent.

See http://gruven42.webhop.org/xpfwbt/xp_firewall_bt.htm

Which gives all the details of which ports etc. but they seem the same as yours. I should open them on my router as well.

How you tried the plus net bandwidth check?

Yes you should make a note of the current settingso so you can go back to that setting if things go wrong. Then try each setting, reboot and see if the speed tests are better.

Downloading Capped?

Hi again
I logged off and stopped downloading show from a music torrent site
and when I re-started my computer I logged back on and ran the bandwidth
test and it said 468.2 Kbps
I started the download again and about 20 mins or so later I ran the test again and I then got this...
164.50 Kbps
Whats happening here can anyone explain how this is happening? :-(
Another question I have is that if I log on and just surf the net and stuff I can stop the connection no problem and turn off my computer but if I use a Bit Torrent or Limewire (MP3) I can not disconnect from the net and the Modem stops responding, also after this I can not turn the computer off and have to press off the power button on
my Ani Surge Unit.
I am using XP.
I hope someone can help with these problems please.
Peace
Andrew.
