Download speed has dropped massively. Why?

As of last night I've been getting download speeds of about a 1/4 of what I'm used to.

My results from the Plusnet speed checker:

Date Speed Achieved (kbps)
01-01-2007 07:52:22 479.4
31-12-2006 23:47:38 486.2

11-01-2006 09:31:58 1915.6
10-01-2006 18:27:03 1912.2

I have checked with another member who is experiencing the same issue. Is it anything to do with New Years and extra usage on the phone system?

I am well under my usage allowance BTW.

Thanks.

PlusNet speed checker is extremely unreliable.....what do you get on?

Download speed has dropped massively. Why?

Hiya,

It's been a known problem for some time that the PN Speedchecker is inherantly broken at the moment, as I've used it and had some extremely low speeds reported, yet have tried BT's speedtester it's given me a totally different result.

Just out of sheer devilment, have you tried the BT Speedtest with no other internet applications running, ie. yahoo messenger, msn, etc etc?

This should give you a fairer assessment of what's going on.
Please bear in mind that if your exchange is set to RED for Virtual Path (VP) Capacity, you are more than likely to see a drop in speed as the backhaul at the exchange is being spread a lot thinner than it should.

Having said that, I just took another look at your results, which were for last night - you will probably find that there will have been a higher number of users at home connected to the net than usual, especially with the inclement weather forcing cancelation of a lot of major events. This will have had some effect, but wouldn't like to point the finger of blame entirely at that.

Hope this helps,

Roger.

At speedtest.bbmax I get 0 for download and 60 for upload when using Firefox but with IE7 we get:

Download Speed: 463 kbps (57.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 371 kbps (46.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

BT speedstest said 448 for download with my service being 500kbs which IIRC is normally far higher.

I am on the 2mb service fwiw.

If it was down to there being loads of people at home due to the bad weather then speeds would increase this morning with most people still in bed.

I also use Dan Ewell's BB speedtester and that shows that I have ping issues and the test fails when downloading from a UK server!

Hi There

You say that you are on a fixed rate service, yet your upload is 300+ this indicates that you are on the IPstream Max service, which is rate adaptive.

it seems that your profile might have been set to 500k downstream

Have a look at this Link which will tell you what your BRAS profile is set at according to PN.

Please bear in mind that this is based on information sent down by BT in their Delta Reports, which is a report sent back to PN telling them what your current highest sync rate with the exchange is.

It might be that you've had quite a few disconnects, or you have a very noisy line which is causing your SNR to drop significantly therefore causing your low sync speed.

Can you tell me if you are using a router or a USB modem just out of curiosity?

It's all a game of variables with MAX i'm afraid, and you'll find lots of threads across the board which reflect this.

If you feel that your speeds are under par (Which I think they are IMO) and you are out of your 10 day training period, then raise a fault report for low speed in the help and support section and it'll walk you through step by step.

If all else fails and you're really not happy with it, raise a ticket and ask to be put back to a fixed rate service.

I do hope this helps you. I'm sure someone else will have a different idea of what is happening though!

Best wishes,
Roge

I'm in the same boat but it's OK as they tell me my speed is acceptable.

I have basically been switched to a 1Mbit connection and they tell me this is OK even if it's half what I originally signed up for.How do I get my Mac code?

I've had a reply stating that they had switched me down to 1Mbit automatically(WITHOUT INFORMING ME)to make it more reliable.Nice trick if you can get away with it.

I spoken to a Plusnet tech support person who tells me that the issue is with the exchange. The report that PN get from BT apparently says that, starting on the 27th, the speed of the line or whatever was reduced bit by bit until it is how it is today.

PN say that it only takes one hour of problems for this process to start but up to three days for it to rectify itself and that the fault is probably due to 'noise' on the line.

FWIW I'm using a Netgear DG834 v2 router and on the Netgear set-up site it shows the downstream connection speed to be varying wildly. This morning it was over 4000kbps but now it 1472 kbps!

My router keeps dropping the connection too. This has been happening since, oddly, about the 27th.

AFAIK I'm not on Max as I haven't yet asked to be upgraded to an 8mb connection or whatever it is.

I'm on Broadband Plus at 2mb.

Yeah right.

Download speed has dropped massively. Why?

Tech have set my line manually back to 4Mbit/s but all tests still show 1Mbit/s.What I cant understand is why they messed with something that was working fine and I had no complaints about.I have run the BT test and they still report I'm on a 1Mbit connection.

Download speed has dropped massively. Why?

Yes,

It means you are in IPStream MAX, and it looks like your SNR Margin is perfectly fine, so I can only assume that it's contention at the exchange that is causing the problem.

And.. you should have been informed that you were due to be upgraded.

It's worth checking your postmaster email account to see if there is a notification in there as that is generally where PN will send any notification to.

Regards,
Roger.

I've checked the postmaster account but there is nothing left in there.

Does this mean that the issues I'm having are to do with the 10 day change over to the 8mb service?

Download speed has dropped massively. Why?

@webserf & Johnstone66

I have made a member of the comms team aware of this thread.

I'm not sure how long it will take them to respond as it's the New Year Bank Holiday.

In the meantime, I would urge you both to raise tickets if you feel that things are not as they should be, this should help expedite the process.

I'm sorry I can't be any more help than that.

Regards,

Roger.
