Dell Dim2350 & Plusnet ADSL thru USB modem

I can't get this to work - the line is there, but my Dell doesn't ask for a username in setting up, so I have no connection!
after many calls to Plusnet, they tell me to contact Dell (who of course are closed) and I've spent 2 hours searching various sites

Please - anyone who has got this to work - the USB modem supplied by Plusnet on the Dell - helpHuh
thank you very much

Ok,is it the usb A360 modem?
If so,you do not connect it to your pc til after you installed the driver from the install disk.
When you have installed the driver, reboot and then connect it to the pc.
Windows will then finish installing it.
The filter splitter plugs in your phone socket and the modem connector in the ADSL socket on the filter.
Your phone plugs in the phone socket on the filter.
The other filter is not used(the american one).
An icon should be on the desktop, double click it,enter user name&password in it,then click connect.
Email me if you still need help.

RE: Dell Dim2350 & Plusnet ADSL thru USB modem

thanks for a great reply! I've also raised an official ticket...

my issue is that I'm not getting the shortcut on the desktop, so can't enter username and password, so while the line is physically there, I can't DO
anything with it!

and thanks also for the explanation about the US filter thing - I couldn't work the instructions out on this!
cheers & regards
Sali

OK,
Try this...............
1.go to network connections folder.
2.Look for the Wip Tech icon, double click it.
3.When it opens, enter user name and password.
That will connect you.
If the Wip tech icon is there, right click and create a shortcut on the desktop.

If it is not there then uninstall modem drivers, unplug your modem from the pc.
Insert install cd,install modem drivers, reboot,re connect modem to pc.

Sadly no icon there - 2 dialups (dellnet and tiscali), one Lan/high speed internet (my lan connection to the laptop over crossover ethernet) and a new connection wizard and network setup wizard. I also did a search on "wip*" and nothing...(well, I have 2 WIPCFG.INI files)

done - no shortcut, no icon in network connections. when I reboot after plugging in the modem, it wants to do an installation (I cancelled)

so still no luck...

thanks - I've posted rather than emailed here as there appears to be someone else with the same problem!

Any other suggestions? I'm following the plusnet ticket, and have sent an email to dynamode just in case...
cheers

Sal,
uninstall the modem driver/software.
Unplug the modem from the pc.
Insert installer disk,install.
Reboot.
Plug in the modem to pc.
It will be found and windows will install.
Do not cancel.
Let it run.
Ok

Thanks again for coming back on this!
tried - I've got the line fine - but still no wintec (or wintek) so still no opportunity to enter username and password!
Plusnet solution is to reinstall XP (its a brand new Dell, factory installed software, a week old) - if not, send it back and give up!
which means at least a week I guess (!)
any final suggestions?
thank U

RE: Dell Dim2350 & Plusnet ADSL thru USB modem

Sali,
I think you should give it a try(reformat&install)
Clean installation of windows, then install modem.
Only install important software(programs)first.
No other connection(dialup).
If it works, then install the programs you need.
If I was a bit closer I could sort it out for you.
Keep me informed,
Kev.

RE: Dell Dim2350 & Plusnet ADSL thru USB modem

I had exectly the same problem no wiptech icon created on desktop and no connection in networking or dialup.

Eventually i diabled all startup items using run "msconfig " still had no effect so i wiped hd and reinstalled. It worked fine when i next went to install the usb modem. (on a bare system.)

Fraid i can't explain why it would not install the first few times and did when on a clean install.

Installed first time on my laptop with existing windows on no problem.

Eventualy i bought a router Solwise sar110 -much better solution. Should have bought this as the startup pack instaed of usb

As I said in my reply to Sali,
the reformat/re install way would be the best way forward.
I build&repair pc's and know the problems of modems/installing.
USB can be a pain and sometimes the system just will not behave.
I spend more time sorting out usb and modem problems than I do anything else.
Some usb modems install ok and work, others can act up.
Usb drivers(windows and hardware)sometimes misbehave.
Another thing is Windows XP SP1,that can cause problems.
I'm always ready to help when I can.

sorry didn't mean to post it again!
will try the full reinstall - though somewhat nervous about this!
I've also tried the software on 2 IBM laptops with Win2000 - neither got the wiptek file! so I can't use it with my laptop anyway...
fun & games...
