Data Rate v Stable Rate v Speed Test?

(I think) I was upgraded to MaxDSL around mid May (I suffered all the symptoms other have been reporting such as dropped line, fluctuating speeds for approx two weeks etc). My router now shows that have following data rate

Data Rate - Down 6304Kb / Up 448Kb

PlusNet shows my stable rate as being 5000 Kbps (has been up to 5500 Kbps at one point).

However when I conduct a speed test on the PusNet website I have been getting the following results:

Date - Speed Achieved (kbps)

01/06/2006 19:51 - 1650.1
06/06/2006 19:40 - 1569.4
08/06/2006 23:25 - 2080.4
11/06/2006 22:05 - 2225.1
19/06/2006 23:00 - 2046.1
22/06/2006 09:27 - 2310.7
24/06/2006 10:00 – 2210.0
28/06/2006 19:11 - 2091.4
30/06/2006 19:40 - 2344.2

My questions is – Given the data rate being reported by my router and the stable rate reported by PlusNet should I not be seeing higher speeds than approx 2Mbps on the speed tests?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Other info that may help

Router is a Belkin wireless ADSL router (connecting to it wirelessly with reported speed of 54Mbps)

Noise Margin : Upstream 25 dB / Downstream 4 dB
Attenuation : Upstream 44 dB / Downstream 40 dB

Data Rate v Stable Rate v Speed Test?

I have found PN's speed test to be very unreliable. Try ADSLGuides speed test at http://www.adslguide.org/tools/speedtest.asp .

Expert opinion seems to be that all speed tests should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Data Rate v Stable Rate v Speed Test?

Thanks for the advice ferryside – I’ll use that too and see if I get similar results.

However . . . to make things even more complicated my stable rate has suddenly dropped down to 500Kbps although my router is still reporting a data rate of Down 6912Kb / Up 448Kb Not sure what brought that on.

Having read the advice at https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=stable_rate I’ll try disconnecting and reconnecting once a day for three days and see what happens

In the meantime I have raised a ticket with PLusNet customer service asking them to confirm if I have been upgraded to MaxDSL.

Good Luck you will need it

This is what happened to me when I asked the same question & I’m still non-the wiser (Although my line is synching at 8.1mb so I assume I am on MaxDSL)

Dear Mr Walker,
I can confirm that your line speed was upgraded on 07/06/06, but it appears that we haven't received any of the necessary BT reports, which are used to set the appropriate connection profile on your account.

I will arrange for the necessary changes to be made on your account, however, you may want to disconnect and reconnect your modem/router every 2/3 days, so that your equipment re-sync's with BT's servers.

Dear Mr Walker,
This is because you are not on MaxDSL. You are still only on IPStream 2000, and as such will only synch up at a maximum of 2272kbps
.

But wait for it, This is the best one, I raised a ticket stating that I am still only getting 2mb but Synching at 8.1mb and what was they doing to rectify it and this was the reply:-

Just a quick update, This is the latest reply that I have just received, Dare I say things might be looking up Cheesy

Dear Mr Walker,
I have now checked correctly if your line is on MaxDSL and you are correct, i have therefore set your speed on your account to MaxDSL. We will now need to wait for BT to being sending us whats called delta reports to automatically set your speed. Please allow 7 days for this to being.

Judging by other posts in these forums I was expecting to have to wait some time but to my pleasant surprise they came back to me within 48 hours and confirmed I have been upgraded. Smiley

But looking at walker513’s post above I wouldn’t hold much hope of getting a helpful answer from PlusNet customer service if I was to raise my original post as a ticket with them :?:
