Contention Ratio

Hi there,

I've had ADSL for about 2 months now but what I never understood about the technology was the contention ratio. Sure, plusnet has a description of it somewhere on this site but it's described in a way that ordinary people wont have a full understanding of what it means.

I know that it has to do with my ADSL being shared with 49 other people, but does that mean I could be connecting at 64k or 112k if everyone's using it at the same time, and not 512k?

And one last thing. Does a package with a 20:1 connetion ratio feel twice as fast as a 50:1 one, even if both packages have the same 512k speed?

That's all, thanks.

Contention Ratio

The contention ratios are a maximum at the busiest times so in theory you could be connected at a fifthith of 512k which is 10.24k. However it is very unlikely that these contention ratios will ever be fully maxed.

So at at certain times a 56k modem is faster? That sounds bad.

No, thats the theroretical worst case senario, as I said its unlikely it will ever happen.
