Connection has changed to PPoE

This morning, my husband couldn't get onto the internet before he went off to work. The router (Netgear DG834GT) had been switched off overnight and was connected to the exchange but no further - LCP up but no connection being made to the internet. I tried switching it off, waiting and switching on again but to no avail. Then I used the set-up wizard and all it found was PPoE. I then tried PPoA again and it still wouldn't work. So I set it for PPoE and got a connection immediately.

So, does that mean something has been changed at the exchange (Ponders End) overnight or what?
