Connection Speed. What are people getting?

Hi,

I understand that most of the people here are suffering a slow down in their ADSL connection. I've been measuring my speed via ADSL Guide's SpeedTest (http://adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp)

And what I've been seeing is frankly laughable Sad
I've not got close to 350kbps in days, and even 300kbps is a struggle. This is a joke! I used to get around 430~450...

What are the rest of the people around here getting?
Am I having a worse time of it than most?

I tested at 00.52

>>> Speed: 245Kbps (down), 144Kbps (up) <<<

My browser takes an age to load most pages and seems to hang or have a 'pregnant pause' like someone said in my thread earlier. Browsing is a nightmare, you really shouldn't have to refresh a couple of times to view a page. My 56k dial up account with Plus Net worked better than this!

When are we going to get the ADSL service we pay for? or will we get the rebate people have been asking for?

I too must say that I like Plus Net and hope that the issues are resolved soon.

RE: Connection Speed. What are people getting?

01:01 Ping Plus Net server got this:

Pinging 212.159.11.150 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 212.159.11.150: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=248
Reply from 212.159.11.150: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=248
Reply from 212.159.11.150: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=248
Reply from 212.159.11.150: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=248

Ping statistics for 212.159.11.150:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 20ms, Maximum = 28ms, Average = 23ms

If the Ping times are this reasonable, why is the browsing so dreadfully slow?

I am just happy that I actually got a connection at all.

RE: Connection Speed. What are people getting?

I'm getting very poor connection and cannot do half the things I want to with the internet.

And the real choker for me is that I have just been notifed that this month's bill is going to be taken from me soon!

That is insulting really. If the service was what it is advertised to be I would not object to paying the bill, but with it like this I really do object.

This is now my 4th or 5th request for compensation from Plus Net for poor service. I have been advised in the past by customer service reps to ask for it in a report 'because management read them regularly'

I wonder if this request will be ignored like all the others?

Yours Hopefully

I'm not seeing this at all. In fact, despite the below-par speed test, browsing this evening has fairly zipped along. Even the forums have loaded quicker than usual! Smiley

Perhaps if/when BT (as suppliers of the ADSL infrastructure) are able to supply the service that the ISPs pay for. BT are not even prepared to sign up to an SLA with the ADSL providers, for pete's sake.

If you do it will be down to your ISP's goodwill and nothing else. Check the T&C that apply to the ADSL products - there's no guaranteed level of service. It's done on a 'best effort' basis because that's all that BT offer to them.

All a PING tells you is if a server is awake and if so how fast it responds.

A web page will contain a lot more data than the 32 bytes of each ICMP packet, and this data has to load into your browser and be parsed before being displayed.

Here you go.. I c & p'd it!

Starting speed test...
Do not use your connection until the test has finished.
>>> Speed: 27Kbps (down), 41Kbps (up) <<<
Test complete.

The reason...
Using old dial up! Still can't connectto Plus.net.
But I believe these figures compare quite favourably with other Plus.net users :lol

Ben,
Thanks for the speedtest URL. Here are my stats before ASDL (been waiting a week), I'll post again when I've been activated. I'm hoping I've picked the right ISP !!

Direction Actual Speed True Speed
Downstream 27 Kbps (3.4 KB/sec) 31 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 27 Kbps (3.4 KB/sec) 31 Kbps (inc. overheads)

I've defected from my old ISP after 7 years, good choice ?
