Confused of Solihull - idiots guide please ......

Hello All,

Right - got a plusnet mail a while back with the impressive Tagline that I was about to be upgraded to 8MB !

WOW I thought - I'd be delighted to get 4MB - or even 2MB.

Knowing that there is an issue with the BT exchanges which meant that my "UP to 2MB" service actually gives me 1.1MB Consistently - (which I would be lying to say I understood ) I followed some links to find out when my local exchange would be updated - end of March. Great.

Checked my account - I have been upgraded to "Up to 8Mb" , checked the local exchange status - which has recently been changed to Green from Red :

Results: Solihull

Code: CMSOL
County: Midlands - West
Enabled: 29 Jun 2000
Upgrade Status
Status: Green
Good News, BT have finished enabling this exchange for Max DSL products.
Products will be available from 31/03/06.

I've read elsewhere that there is a 10 day period when they workout what I would actually get - so sometime around the 10th April I should see a difference ?

NO.

This is what I have got :

PlusNet Speed Test
Your current speed is:

1004.50kbps

Which means you can download at 125.56 KB/sec. from our servers.

53.3 kbps 56k Dial Up
64 kbps ISDN 1 Channel
128 kbps ISDN Dual Channel
460 kbps ADSL 500
920 kbps ADSL 1000
1004.5 kbps YOU
1840 kbps ADSL 2000

The following table shows the speeds you achieved from previous runs of the speed tester:

Date Speed Achieved (kbps)
20-04-2006 19:35:37 1000
20-04-2006 19:07:12 968.2
15-06-2005 12:55:01 960.4

Now am i being thick or what ? Can someone with a bit of knowledge fill in the gaps please - am I ever going to get a higher speed ?

Thanks

John

Hi there.

If you read the email again it says:

Quote
We'll also automatically upgrade you to up to 8Mb broadband - this should
take place over the coming months. Once done, we'll email you again to
confirm the good news and let you know some important details about
high-speed broadband.

and then it says:

Quote
In the ten days following your upgrade, you may see your speeds vary. This
is perfectly normal, as tests are carried out during this period to see
what speed your line can support. It's important that you stay connected
during this ten day period so that these tests can take place. After ten
days you should see your speeds stabilise at the fastest speed your line
can support.

The upgrades are happening depending on your product and the year you joined. So obviously people like me and you will be being upgraded last as we only joined last year.

They will send an email informing you that you are being re-graded and thats when the second quote applies.

Allthough it seems you have already been upgraded, in actual fact your product name has just changed. The actual upgrade will happen over the next few months. PN have not made this as clear as they could have unfortunately.

Hope this makes more sense than those dodgy emails Wink

Nice 1 PhearFactor - explains things a bit.

You'd think that in todays modern world that this sort of thing shouldn't be so difficult to action.

Like why it takes a Bank 5 days to clear a cheque ? Whoa .......Straying off subject to another of my bugbears -

thanks for the response
