Cisco 827 ADSL Setup

int dialer1
ip address negotiated

Plusnet will assign the IP to the dialer interface, just as they would to a PC over an ADSL modem (or even over good old-fashioned dialup!)

The specific IP address/subnet has to go on his ethernet port, unless he wants to NAT everything inside his router and put private addresses on the LAN

Incidentally, don't go putting real public IP addresses on PCs without a firewall on said PC: it's really not a good idea from a security PoV ;-)

Cisco 827 ADSL Setup

I'm having a problem setting up my Cisco ADSL 827.
Using the web setup everything completes, but I don't seem to be getting any traffic at all coming downstream, cant even ping Plusnet DNS Servers.

Looked on Cisco site, can't find anything to help.

Help greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Are you running a software firewall and if so have you configured it for this connection?

I'm using Win2k without a host firewall.
I have public ip's, and my connection is setup with no nat at the plusnet end.
It's really about using PPP Unnumbered with this cisco router. It doesn't have the ability to set this up through the web config, so I'm looking for CLI IOS commands to do this.

For information the pc has the correct ip/netmask in place.

Hi,

At the risk of an egg sucking exercise have you checked here

Thanks, but that is just pre config.
I'm looking for the commands for the ATM0 interface to enable IP Unnumbered that are specific to Plusnet.

You shouldn't need ip unnumbered under the ATM0 interface, once you've defined the pvc (0/3Cool and the encapsulation ( aal5mux ppp dialer ) and made it as member of dialer pool-member 1.
Internet_Router1#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
Internet_Router1(config)#int atm0
Internet_Router1(config-if)#pvc 0/38
Internet_Router1(config-if-atm-vc)#encap
Internet_Router1(config-if-atm-vc)#encapsulation aal5mux ppp dialer
Internet_Router1(config-if-atm-vc)# dialer pool-member 1

You'll then need to configure your dialer 1 interface with your username and password and ppp options. ip address if you've got statics or ppp ipcp if it's dynamic from plusnet. you'll have to configure the Di1 interface for NAT outside and the E0 interface for NAT inside. Your dialer should look something like this.

interface Dialer1
ip address 84.x.x.x 255.255.255.252
ip access-group 110 in
ip verify unicast reverse-path
no ip redirects
no ip unreachables
ip accounting access-violations
ip nat outside
ip virtual-reassembly
encapsulation ppp
dialer pool 1
dialer-group 1
ppp authentication chap callin
ppp chap hostname xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ppp chap password 7 xxxxxxxxxxxx

Cheers,

Mike
