Cannot log onto my internet bank through broadband

Hi

This is my first post but having tried to get my question answered by plus net with no solution I thought I would post a message.

We have had plus net broadband for several months but have never been able to log onto our internet banks website. It won't even display the banks home page - comes up with the error 'page cannot be displayed' yet I can access it through our old dial up system. All plus net say is that my security settings or firewall could be preventing the page being displayed but I have tried to access the page with the firewall disable and still no joy, I dont think it can be the security settings either as I have no problems with dial up.

Has anyone got any suggestions as now my dial up modem is not working.

Thanks.

Its Smile - www.smile.co.uk

I've been onto their technical help guys and set my security settings, cookies etc to what they say but it still does not work with my broadband, yet it works on our old dial up system with no problems.

When putting 195.92.230.229 in the browser it comes up with a msn search page saying We can't find "195.92.230.229".

Takes me straight to the Smile bank page.

Have you rebooted your PC AND router since having the problem? If not, try that.

Installed any new software or updates recently, especially to security software?

Open a DOS window and try nslookup

I can't think of any reason why this should be stopping it but navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC then open the file "hosts" with notepad and see if there is anything in it related to either smile or 195.92.230.229

And have you rebooted?

If you have, it could still point to something local as the IP address is being returned correctly.

Try adjusting your MTU which can affect accessing some sites. Just do a search for MTU for info and tools.

Also have you tried a different browser like firefox?

# End of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy

As you can see I have nulled these lines and it is now working. It seems Spybot had something to do with it.

Thanks everyone for all your help --- I'll get on to doing to some banking mow. Cheesy

I may be being overly paranoid here, but I can't see any reason why SpyBot Search and Destroy would add entries to your Hosts file that point UK banking websites to an IP address in Hong Kong (an IP address that isn't responding right now, the cause of your original problem).

Changing the HOSTS file to point websites to alien IP addresses is classic malware behaviour, I'd complete a full scan using Windows Defender and up to date anti-virus before I'd put any financial data into your computer.

Regardless of if you have actually been infected this time, check that you've got a firewall turned on (Windows Firewall is fine) or are behind a router, and consider using a non-standard browser to visit any sites you don't know and trust.

Those address are outside of the entries added by SpyBot. But the question is why did SpyBot spot them, as said before that is classic malware.

I run AVG free and that flags up if there have been any changes to the hosts file.
