Cannot connect to some web sites

Cannot connect to some web sites

I have 3 PC's that access the www

2 are on Wireless through a Linksys Access Point
1 is hard wired via ethernet to the router

None of the PC's can connect to Microsoft or eBay
but can connect tot he likes of Google, BBC, even Banks
so its not a secure site issue

I've just taken one of the PC's to work and connected it to their
network and can see all sites no problem so its not a firewall
or AV issue within the PC

So my guess is somethings either changed in the router or
my area is not being serviced properly by Plusnet ?

any ideas folks ??

thanks in advance

Have you tried another browser to discount Microsofts rubbish. Don't think it will be PN as others would be screaming about it by now.

Cannot connect to some web sites

Are all your PC's able to see each other? Can your PC's see the router?
It sounds like it could be a router setup issue or maybe a firewall rule on the router is blocking the traffic?

Are you able to access e-mail via an e-mail client?

Do you have an ADSL Modem or another router you could try?

You haven't added proxy settings to your internet explorer have you? that maybe are setup for work?

Cannot connect to some web sites

Have tried Opera browser still the same thing happens

No settings on the router have altered for months,

Proxy settings ?? where are these ?

Forget about the proxy Q, it's not relevant in your case.

Try configuring widows to use different PlusNet DNS servers: & as there are some domains that for some reason are not being resolved by the default DNS servers. There is on-going work related to DNS issues.

Did you rasie this issue on usenet. If so I have replied there with a similar suggestion.

Cannot connect to some web sites

Yes many thanks

I did change the DNS in the PC's settings but perhaps not in the router
(if they are listed there)

I will go check now and see if that fixed things

Oh, yes I did start this in the Usenet. apols for double posting

OK should'nt have changed the DNS on the PC as it should be looking for the IP of the router.. changed back...

Router is already of the 6.9 and 6.10 DNS settings...

now heres the wierd bit....

Everything works tonight,, and I've not changed a thing...

but !!

Plus net announce... "Planned Maintenance - DNS resolution - Friday 3rd September 5am-6am Not due to customer reported problems"

So I've now experienced 2 days working, 2 days not and now back to working again.. without actually changing anything...

and they say its not PN?Huh

Cannot connect to some web sites

OK how mad is this

booted this evening and back to limited access

can anyone shed any light on whats going on Huh

no changes to settings from yesterday when everything was fine

I've been having problems recently which simply seem to come and go. When i fist had ADSL, everything was fine for a while, file sharing and browsing was ok. Then after four days, the connection started dropping intermitently, although the synch light was still on - also file sharing failed! Suddenly two weeks later, file sharing starts working and the connection stabilises.

However, one of my computers connected to the router cannot access the internet - can anyone shed some clues on this. I can acces the router via the computer but not the net. Could it be a virus?

Cannot connect to some web sites

Start from the begining. goto start/run type cmd then ipconfig /all post the results from all the pc's. When you find a site you cant get to try doing a ping ie ping see if this comes back with an ip address. If it doesnt then it is a dns problem. If it does try connecting to the ip in IE and see if that works.

check C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
its a text file you can open with notpad a lot of spyware will put the wrong ip in there for sites to stop you getting to them. If you see something like then that would mean windows look for ebay on your pc.

You could also try a tracert to sites you cant get to and let us see the results.

Another problem could be dns cache if it cant find a site it marks it as not there so it never actualy looks again for X mins.

goto control panel admin tools services and stop the dns client and then try.

You should do a virus scan and a adaware scan to be sure its not a virus or spyware, some worms would give these intermitant results

Cannot connect to some web sites

I stopped the DNS Client and instantly the sites I could'nt access
all came up

so what exactly does tis mean?

I run ad aware regularly (3 times a week) do I need to run this every time I switch on?

thanks Mr Right, looks like you've sorted it!

Cannot connect to some web sites

The DNS client is basically a local cache of DNS lookups stored on your PC. If you visit sites frequently it can lookup the DNS entry locally which is much faster. However, sometimes it can get confused and store bad DNS entries so when you visit your sites it basically does a local lookup which returns nothing or DNS not found and you get the page not found errors.

Stopping the DNS service stops local cached copied of DNS lookups so it always goes to PlusNets (or whatever DMS you have setup) server for the DNS lookup.

Rebooting clears this local cache as does the following command at a dos prompt:

c:> ipconfig /flushdns

The problem you were having is not caused by malware/spyware so it is not necessary to scan using adaware when you switch on.

Cannot connect to some web sites

Not really... A link to your other forum post would help.

What is the site (URL?)
What is the exact problem you are having?
Do a tracert to it and post the results

Cannot connect to some web sites

My other forum post is here ;

How do I do a tracert to it?
Site is
Basically can sometime get to site then I have to input data but then get the page cannot be displayed.

Some one else tried this for me and got these results ;
PlusNet connection - And cannot log in .. just get a dead page.
Proxy Connection via an IP in the USA - It works fine.
Pipex Connection - And same as PlusNet cannot log in..

Suggests that the problem is at the sites end and they have a routing problem. Does this seem right? Or could there be another solution. Have posted to site to suggest they have a problem but no reply (USA site). Also tried opera got in once but no luck after that first try. Have cleared my cache several times.
