Broadband Speed

Hi All,
This is my first post so be gentle Cheesy

I have had Broadband Plus for nearly three months with no problems at all - good speed 6 to 6.8Mps until yesterday when my modem (Voyager 105 as supplied) is now showing 7.1Mps as I write this but everything with regard to downloading - lots of podcasts - has slowed to a crawl. 10Meg podcast came down in a few seconds and now its like being back on dialup. Is my modem telling fibs or what? Can anyone tell what's going on in very simple terms please. Thanks in advance.

Ooh you fibber! - Linky

BB+ has the lowest priority of all account types so you will see some slowdowns when the network is busy - and it is frequently busy at the moment. More capacity is due to come online in March when things should improve again.

If your total usage 8am to midnight is less than 2GB you would be better off on PAYG - Linky.

Broadband Speed

Could you possibly try running http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results here?

Would also be helpful if you run something like http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and report back with the results?

Broadband Speed

Sorry - forgot about previous 2 posts Shockedops:

regarding speed tests:

BT returns:
IP profile is 152kbps
DSL connection rate 448kbps (upstream) 7136kbps (Downstream)
Actual IP throughput achieved 117kbps

above figures also shown by DSL modem figs

BB Max returns:

129kbps Download 380kbps upload

Hope this means something

Broadband Speed

It means that some sort of interference has forced your modem to disconnect and reconnect at a very, very low speed. This may be a one off blip, but there are some other users experiencing similar problems at the moment.

Providing you stay synced at a good speed your speeds will return in about 3 days after they went down.

This is something BT have done - not Plusnet.

And therein lies your issue.

It looks as though BT are profiling your connection at 152kbps maximum. This is usually the result of a 'blip' in your connection speed with the exchange - where the synch speed has reduced.

If it's not happened before, then I'd say that stormy weather is probably the most likely cause at the minute for a drop in connection speed. However, with the BT profiling rules, even when it comes back up to normal it can take a while for BT to pick this up and adjust the profile back up.

What I'd recommend doing is rebooting your router or reconnecting your modem a couple of times a day. Within around 72 hours it should have increased back to it's normal setting (and you can run a BT Speedtest again to verify).

If it goes on for longer than 7 days or so - then we can raise it as a fault to BT - but in reality it should sort itself out.

Is that a helpful explaination?

speed

hi,

I have a similar problem.

These are my speeds over the last few days (tested using the plusnet tester)

Date Speed Achieved (kbps)

23-01-2007 16:53:40 206.9
23-01-2007 16:14:17 285.6
23-01-2007 16:12:08 236.1
20-01-2007 23:59:53 334.1
20-01-2007 23:59:11 285.4
17-01-2007 20:34:41 314.6
17-01-2007 20:33:54 223.5
17-01-2007 12:20:25 3745.8
17-01-2007 12:19:45 3422.8
16-01-2007 18:54:23 3358.3
16-01-2007 18:53:21 3352.3
15-01-2007 23:17:46 448.6
15-01-2007 23:16:24 443.4

as you can see most are <500kbps while, perhaps naively, I was expecting them to be between 1,000 and 8,000 (right?)
can this be explained simply by busy traffic or there is something that I can do to improve my setting?
thanks

Broadband Speed

Many Thanks for replies Smiley

In the area I live we have recently had very bad weather with heavy rain and high winds. All the phone lines are above ground so the answers would seem to have some bearing. I will carry out suggested remedies and report back as this may help others. All replies have been helpful

Thanks again.
