BT Speed Test

I've got the 2mb Prem account and just run the BT speed test - and to be honest not sure how to interperate the result
Could someone be kind enough to read the result and tell me if the result is within the range it should be for my connection type

the speed test has completed on test server speedtester2.nat.bt.com for user (telephone number) and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

1193 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

Your IP address is !!!.Huh.!!!.Huh, your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and is running on Windows XP.

BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service:

For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps.
For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps.
For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps.
For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps.

You may now disconnect from the speed test account (click 'disconnect' in your internet connection window) and if you wish to regain normal access to the internet please re-connect to your ISP using your usual username and password.

Please note that test results may vary according to varying traffic in the network. If you continue to experience slower throughput when logged in to your ISP, this may be due to a slow internet site or high traffic levels beyond the BT Wholesale Network. Please report this situation to your ISP's helpdesk.

Cheers

BT Speed Test

Well, your in band " For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps" and as you got 1193, your in that range. Hope that helps.

BT Speed Test

Yes thanks - but it makes you think the ranges shown by BT as normal service
someone for example on 1000kbps could in theory have a better speed than someone on 2000kbps and still be acceptable - dispite the fact that they would be spending more on their connection - interesting (I think that's the word lol)

BT Speed Test

If you're consistently getting only 1Mb speed on a 2Mb line, that's not right.

Do the Plusnet and ADSL Guide speed tests also give this speed every time?

These are my result on the Pn speed test, which I assume to be more or less normal:

NB for the figures around 1000, I discovered I was downloading with Azureus at the same time, so they don't count!!!! You've not got anything else going on, have you?

If youdo the BT speed test a number of times and get no better than what you've said, I'd report it to Pn as there may be something wrong with your line.

BT Speed Test

Perhaps that was just to make you go away?

Doesn't make much sense to me if you can only expect a regular 1Mb from a 2Mb line. Perhaps one of the guys who understand these things can say whether Pn were right about it being OK, and if so, why?

BT Speed Test

The difficulty is that if the BT speedtester shows it within the acceptable limits, as defined by BT, then Plus Net are very limited in what they can do.

If you were acheiving 1mb speeds on a 2mb connection outside of peak times then that might be a different story. Try, if you are still awake, to run the tests at about 0200 and see what you get.

If anything can be done though, it will be an uphill struggle.
