Azureus makes download slow, even when it downloads nothing

I have 2Mb premier.

Start up Azureus, downloading no torrents, uploading a few.

This makes my entire connection very very slow to download.

Speed tests like 56k modem, web pages come up very slow.

Close down Azureus, it gets back to normal speed.

I repeat, it is downloading nothing, doing just 20k ish upload.

No such effect with emule.

Have others seen a similar effect? It is very repeatable.

Its Sygate!

Aha, if I make my Sygate firewall allow all, i.e. turn off, my line speed
is fast again, turn it back to normal, no very slow.

Gah!

Looks like I'll have to tweak Sygate.

Limit the upload to around 12Kbps max .. when you're seeding at full upload speed, your download will suffer.

I have set my max upload speed to 20k and my download speeds / pings are fine. But yeah, uploading affects your download speed.

Doesn't seem much to do with upload rate, with further investigation I see it effects the dg834gt router, i.e. other pcs on the network.

e.g. without azureus, I get 1840kbps, with it, doing 20k upload,
I get about 128Kbps!!!

And that's true of other pcs on the network, i.e. much worse than you'd
expect, and not what you see trying the same thing in emule.

I suspect it may be to do with Azureus Upnp.

I turned it off, and it suddenly has got much better.

I can now upload at 20k and still get good download, browsing, speed test etc.

No doubt it will die after this message, but for the moment that seems to be it.

Azureus makes download slow, even when it downloads nothing

Hi

Check the setting 'Max number of connections globally' found by going to Tools/Options - then Transfer

Mine is set to 120. If you set this too high this will over load the NAT sessions your router can handle - My router is a SAR110.

Nat Session are used my the router to store what transulation was use for each connection in and out traffic - so when the return traffic for that connection is pass back thorugh the router - the router knows what do do with it. Now if you are max-ing out the router NAT session table/memory with BitTor connection - other service (HTTP etc) will have to wait for the router to free memory to handle the next connection.

Hope this helps

It is back to its previous state, even though UPnP is off it still kills
my speed test, browsing speed etc. bah!

FYI I'm not using any port forwarding, just a DMZ to my box.

I have turned my global connections down to 70, just in case its that.

Seems a bit better, sometimes 512, sometimes 1024, sometimes 50, but still half of what I'd expect.

Anyone know a BitTorrent Client as nice as Azureus?

I don't think this used to happen, but tried going back to earlier versions to no avail. Most odd.
