ADSL down

Now I've never been the one to complain. But I've only had ADSL 1mb since last wednesday. I thought it would be the answer to my prayers, always on connection, never down, but, last night at 11.30pm it decided to disconnect me and not reconnect me till 8 this morning!!!!

Was there a problem somewhere? Were you down for maintenance? I was really annoyed last night as i was trying to upload a website!

Alos my 1mb connection doesnt seem that fast when colleagues in work are getting 55-60k with their 512k AOL and im getting 90k with my 1mb!!!

Have you checked the Service Status link on the page to see if there were any problems with the network last night?, and 90k's not bad, depends where your downloading from realy. Have you ran a speed test? Post your results and I'm sure the guys here will help you out.

Have you tweaked youer MTU settings yet?

Allthough the original goal of MTU tweaking was to get around the problems that existsed in the ADSL network, now these are fixed they are used to kill any speed problems like this in many cases.

yep ive set my mtu at 1478 and used the Dr TCP proggie. I'm running my 2 pcs through a netgear d834g router. Thought i would be getting slightly higher speeds.

In DrTCP ensure you have changed MTU in the box
MTU(RAS) aswell. Increase RWIN (TCPRecieve to 31,636).
You need to re-boot or re-connect for the effects to take
place. You might have already done this so apologies if this
is the case.
You mention the Netgear DG834G does this mean you are
running both your computers wirelessly? if so are you
using WEP encryption? this tends to slow things down
a bit. Microsoft are introducing WPA encryption, a more
advanced security system and this is claimed to be
faster. However it will probably be a while before
hardware get's upgraded, which I believe can be done via
firmware.

sorry i put the wrong model number down. It's the DG834

It isn't normal to experience constant disconnections,
so if this continues you'll need to take some action.
There have been some issues with latency regarding your
router which are being addressed in a firmware upgrade
so I would look out for this and upgrade when available.
If possible check your wiring and sockets by connecting back to the master socket and working your way down, 1 Meg is more
demanding. Check your filters these can sometimes cause
disconnections and degrade performance when faulty.
A faulty router would disconnect, I dont know if it's possible
for you to check it on a friends line. This was an issue with
the previous model DG814.
Next would be your pc, you've already 'optimised' your TCP
settings but also have a check for spyware on your system
with Ad-aware and/or Spybot, spyware would cause a
slowdown. Make sure you have all the latest service packs
for your operating system, Updating the motherboard BIOS is recommended for an older system as well as installing any
latest chipset drivers, particularly in the case of VIA chipsets.
Finally this would leave your line, it doesn't sound like
it's performing as it should, both speedwise and the disconnections.
I would report this in the thread 'ADSL speed
problems', follow the procedure set out at the beginning, this
would then be picked up by support and the problem
could be reported to BT .
You could also raise a ticket via the 'Contact us' procedure
in the portal, especially if you continue to suffer long disconnections.
Support can test your line and escalate the issue as necessary.

thx for the info. I'm pretty dissapointed with the 1mb experience as friends and colleagues are getting 120k and am now getting 75-90k Sad

Another thought , is that you should also take the
tweak test here.
If you take the test a few times and consistently get below 100%
line efficiency then this would indicate packet loss which might
account for the drop in speed.
Also if you download some files from plusnet's file vault this
would give you a better indication of what your line is capable of.
If the download starts at a very low speed, stop it and then try again
untill it starts high and drops down to a constant speed.
