ADSL and ICS

Hello,

I've just installed ADSL in the following configuration

Machine 1 : WXP (professional) with the ADSL connection

Machine 2 : cross connected to machine 2 using ICS - also running XP

The problem I have is that I am now experiencing regular crashes on
machine 2 - it just freezes after anything from 2-60 minutes after starting.

I wonder if anyone else has this problem?

I contacted PlusNet support - they just said they don't support networking!

Many hyperthanks in advance.

We ned more info on this. Does it freeze and then go ok or does it crash? Has this only happened since you networked?

The first thing is to see if its the network or some other error that is the problem it. When it freezes can you get to it on the other pc ie connect to a share, ping it view the eventlog remotly?

You need to work out what is doeng the freeze CPU HD or NETWORK

It started happening after I installed ADSL - previously we had a steam modem and everything was OK.

So - I'm working on the assumption that it's the ADSL that's causing the
problem.

It's the attached machine that crashes - just freezes and then needs a reboot .
This can occur anytime from 2-60 minutes - the average up-time is about 10
minutes - so it's a right pain.

I've run the 2 machines together with the ADSL disconnected and have had
no crashes (although that doesn't necessarily mean anything I suppose)

I just wondered if anyone out there had experienced the same sort of problem.

Latest update.

I finally found the fault existed on the machine even when it was completely
disconnected from the network.

I reinstalled WXP (again!) and have had no problems for 24 hours.

I then installed Microsoft's 'critical updates' and the fault immediately
re-appeared.

So - it looks as if these critical updates are the cause.

Now - the failing PC is quite old, so I'm going to .....

1. Flash the Bios to the latest version.
2. disable the 'on-board' sound - I've heard this can cause problems.

... and then try the whole thing again ...
