ADSL Web Server bad - so what's good?

I was setting up a linux firewall for my network (single IP) and by the time I worked out that I have to use NAT on my router to make public any services I realised I don't really need a firewall. I have to open ports already and I don't yet need a dedicated intrusion detection server do I?

So I'll plug on with setting up my own SMTP I think. But what else can I do? Web servers are not suitable at all to ADSL. So what work OK?

For example would I be able to host an OK FTP (prolly not due to the upstream) or streaming audio server? IRC servers work well enough? How about a Half Life server (prolly not on 512 connection)

Well you get the idea. Where can I go to get edjumacated?

I do actually get a nice game of counterstrike running the game on mine. It runs sweat as a server.
I also got an older machine which can run a dedicated server for counterstrike and a 16 20 player match goes on ok.

Seriously? Do you get 16 people on it and what sort of ping do they get? Do you know if they are local to the UK and BT or from all over?

And would you say a PII with 140Mb or so RAM could run a decent dedicated?

Cheers
